What advice would you give to someone applying to this role?

Manufacturing is a forever changing environment, and my role is so diverse. Sometimes I am working at a computer, other times I'm building things (which I had never really done before but now I feel I am more than confident with a hacksaw and drill), and a lot of the time, my job is all about communication. I would advise anyone applying for a manufacturing role to enter with an open mind. Tasks I could be working on one day with high importance could change the next due to quality issues or health and safety issues. You need to be a real people person and have good communication skills for implementing change because from what I have experienced - a lot of people don't like change. Lastly, sometimes you need to think smaller to think bigger. I have learnt not to jump to the hardest most expensive solution. Sometimes, the solution is simple, cheap and easy, but overlooked.

Do you have any interview tips?

Don't be afraid to oversell yourself, no one else is going to do it for you. When talking to my manager about why he hired us, of course he was looking at the perfect fit for the job on a professional level but he was also looking for someone who would fit in personality wise with his team. Manufacturing is all about communication, as I have said, so he was looking for a good level of interaction as well as knowledge.
