What advice would you give to someone applying to this role?

Retail experience, no matter how little, must be at the forefront of your application! Discuss in your cover letter the current retail market and how TJX fits into this, offer an opinion! Your cover letter should show a passion for retail but also understand the challenges this sector is facing. TJX is defying the odds and you should specify your knowledge of this.

Do you have any interview tips?

Be social and talkative! When waiting with other candidates, get to know each other; this is a great way to break the ice and when interviewers come to introduce themselves there is already a positive environment.

For my assessment centre, I completed 2 interviews (one with a merchandising director and one with a buyer) as well as 1 stock planning activity and 2 group tasks.

For the interviews have a great knowledge of TJX (e.g. what countries their in, future perspectives, etc.) and the off-price model they stand for. Be able to articulate what merchandising is and how it impacts a retail business.

The stock planning task requires candidates to think about a specified product type and how much they would send to certain stores. Make sure you able to justify every decision, as you will be required to talk the buyer through your thought process in your second interview.

For group tasks, do not feel the need to jump in and take charge; concisely articulate your opinion and definitely be present throughout the conversation. A great tip would be to include other candidates; once you've finished speaking pass the conversation to another candidate who hasn't spoken yet. E.g. 'what do you think (name)?

For the first group task, we were given a character description and had to argue why our character should be saved from a disaster. Make sure you understand the description you've been given and ask for more information if you don't. Your priority is to persuade the other candidates to save you, but do not talk over one another.

The second group task involved rating a group of t-shirts based on the brand, fashion element, retail price and quality of the garment. The group must decide together and have quite quick time constraints. The group must then decide which T-shirts they would order and how much. Make sure to have an opinion, don't just rely on agreeing with everyone else and get stuck in!

Make sure with every task/question you are given, you remember every detail of it. E.g. Which T-shirts, a maximum of 3, would you order and how much? This doesn't mean you have to order 3 different T-shirts.

Be bold and take risks, but be able to justify these decisions with evidence!
