Current salary: £25,000 - £27,000

What hours do you actually work, on average?

What advice would you give to someone applying to this role?

Application will most likely be online, answer any questions with straight to the point, short sentences which do not contain endless filler.

Name-drop key phrases and buzzwords : Glue, Building Information Modelling, BIM Level 2, BREEAM etc. But be prepared to back these up with good knowledge on the subjects.

Draw back each question to your relevant experience (this could be in a work placement, or uni modules) and explain how you have overcome adversity in the past.

If producing a cover letter, apply the same rules. Spend time on this document and if you like run it past your colleagues/ uni professors.

CV styles differ, I prefer mine to be no more than 1 page, split into 2 columns. Qualifications and work experience to be easily identifiable.

Do you have any interview tips?

Relevant (if not directly) work experience is absolutely key. I applied to BAM during my final year with a years previous experience during my placement year behind me. Come my interview without this I would have found it extremely difficult to answer questions appropriately.

Brush up on the region you are applying to by looking at the BAM website and name drop a few of the projects that look interesting, and if appropriate, why (i.e. particular building materials/technologies etc.). It is essential that you demonstrate you have strong communication skills and that you are not fazed by meeting new people or being put in unfamiliar situations.

Train up on key modules with your uni degree and use them to answer questions to demonstrate competency, combined with any practical experience you may have in the sector. Even though in my previous role I was a site engineer, a lot of my experience was still directly applicable to the DM role.

If you are applying for this role you must be aware of BIM, if not you must make yourself aware of it (i.e. Level 2 requirement). Key for BAM is BIM360 Glue, and other programs that would be handy to know are Revit & Navisworks etc. As a DM you will not be using the latter, but it doesn't hurt to demonstrate your competency. As a student you should be able to download a free version of Glue and practise models. Do so, get familiar with the system, is possible apply it to your interview and perhaps bring the material with you.

Have something extra-curricular that you enjoy and helps set you apart.

Overall, advice for any interview will work fine. Keep calm and try to enjoy the experience. If you come prepared there's no reason why you shouldn't be successful. Try and ask a few questions (BIM related would be good, or specifics of the scheme) to seem interested and engaged in the potential role.
