What advice would you give to someone applying to this role?

As with many companies, I feel BAM are looking for capable candidates that are also well rounded. A strong application will demonstrate active extra-curricular interests, a desire to engage with the community in line with BAM's CSR activities and of course technical knowledge relevant to the position being applied for.

It is difficult to secure a position in the construction industry without experience, many candidates will be lucky to have undertaken an industrial placement. This is a key component to the application process and when giving an account of your experience it is important to show how you developed as a person over the course of your placement. By emphasisng how your role developed from start to finish with a focus on where you have taken on additional responsibilities as you have progressed, and then being able to demonstrate how you have carried these out competently will strengthen your application. Be honest when recounting this experience, know that there will naturaly be limitations to what a candidiate will have undertaken at this early stage of their career - this will also be understood by your recruiter - therefore give a realistic portrayal of your previous roles and responsibilities, but really highlight how you have progressed and developed. This trajectory will be used as a basis of determining how you will develop further. When working for BAM.

Many applicants may not have undertaken an industrial placement, but development can still be demonstrated by highlighting any previous experience from work roles or extra-curricular activities that demonstrate the desired qualities from a candidate i.e. good communication skills, good use of logic and initiative, taking ownership of a task and being able to demonstrate accountability.

Do you have any interview tips?

As with any interview, preparation is key. It pays to do some research into the company structure and market postion. Knowledge of some key financial figures will demonstrate that you have taken time to research into the larger entity that you are to become a part of.

Learn your CV inside-out, as mentioned before being able to demonstrate your competencies and development is crucial. You will be asked questions about various roles and the experience that you have documented on your CV be prepared with answers for every position that you have stated. Always discuss previous roles in a positive light, highlighting the aspects where you shone through as an employee. Never discuss aspects negatively, if something went wrong during a certain position this is to be viewed as an opportunity for improvement and then demonstarte where you have improved in further roles.

Be relaxed in the interview, and regard it as an open discussion rather than an interrogation. By preparing adequately, you can conduct yourself confidently. The preparation should be used as a tool to cover all the bases that could potentially be questioned in the interview. If your knowledge of yourself and the company is second nature before the interview, your responses will come naturally.

You will be asked where do you see yourself in the future, it is crucial to demonstrate your desire to learn and develop as a candidate. Your interviewers will want to see that you are looking to be with BAM longer term.
