What advice would you give to someone applying to this role?

It’s a long drawn out process. If you make it through all the hoops and get offered a graduate place you still need to get security clearance and pass a medical exam. It’s not difficult it is just slow.

Video Interview: This was the weirdest thing I had done (think creating a YouTube video). Think about what is on the wall behind you (including whether the poster you have removed has left marks on the wall - it’s noticed believe me), don’t keep looking at your notes - it is obvious when they play the videos if you keep looking to the side of the camera. Wear smart clothes and when you get to the last question which is basically 'is there anything else you would like to say' use this to clarify on previous questions - not stare stupidly at the camera for 60 seconds.

Assessment centre: Is long and draining, competency based interview, technical interview, written test and a group exercise (had to prepare a press release and find out the root cause of an accident). We met our assessors the night before for an 'informal dinner', though they said we weren't being assessed it was still there first impressions of us - dress appropriately and bring a dinners worth of polite conversations and questions to ask

Do you have any interview tips?

Competency based interview - examples of being a team player, dealt with a difficult situation etc

Technical interview - will vary between disciplines - I had to do a brief presentation on myself, talk about my degree modules and dissertation, and what areas I was interested in working in.

Remember that Sellafield is big on safety; also remember that it is the nuclear industry so think how the perception of the public influences what we do, as well Sellafield’s history and current operations.
