What are the Best and Worst things about your job?

Best

The people - I get on really well with people on the graduate scheme and off it. You read about a company culture before you start work and brush it off as something that can't really have much of an impact, but now that I'm here it is pretty clear to me that most people have similar values. Most people I have experienced working with are highly competent when it comes to their work but then don't take themselves too seriously out of it.

Worst

The worst bit about it for me is probably not something that is specific to Virgin Media. The graduate scheme can become more competitive than I like when it comes to rotating onto new roles at the end of each year. I understand why it is - there needs to be some basis for role allocation but it can end up leaving people with a role that wouldn't necessarily interest them. Saying that though - the majority of the roles are challenging and offer a good range of development opportunity, just need to make the best of the situation if you are given a role that wasn't your top choice.

What is the annual salary for this role?

Starting salary: £29,000 - £31,000

Current salary: £33,000 - £35,000

What hours do you actually work, on average?

Start: 08:30

Finish: 16:45

What advice would you give to someone applying to this role?

The application was fairly standard, a bit of knowledge of the industry and Virgin Media's growth targets would be beneficial. I would also recommend doing some research on the parent company - Liberty Global.

Do you have any interview tips?

I don't remember being asked any particularly strange questions when I was interviewed. Being a second-year graduate now though I have had the opportunity to take part in the interviewing of prospective graduates - I would immediately mark down someone that said they had done something but then couldn't back it up with evidence. The other thing I dislike in interviews is people giving answers they think I would like to hear rather than offering their actual thoughts. It's usually quite easy to tell whether someone believes in what they are saying or not.
