What are the Best and Worst things about your job?

Best

The content of the work I get to do, I work on high profile and extremely interesting projects which is fantastic for my first job. I get to get stuck in first hand and have even taken the lead on some smaller projects. The company encourages the training to be 90% on the job and 10% courses etc. which I believe works very well. I am learning a lot and I am getting involved with a lot more than expected this early on in my career. I have much more responsibility than I would in the same role with other companies. The other great thing about my job is the people I get to work with and I have met through the job. I have had unbelievable opportunities such as going for lunch with the CEO and attending digital workshops to help the company adapt for the future.

Worst

The worst thing about my job and the engineering/construction industry as a whole is gender inequality. I have had to tackle problems of unequal pay and unequal opportunity (my male counterpart being paid more and being offered more responsibility). I believe this is a work In progress for the industry but there is a lot more than can be done to prevent this from happening.

What is the annual salary for this role?

What advice would you give to someone applying to this role?

Strong CV adapted to the role, focus skills on what the job role requires and tailor your CV this way. The application was an online CV and cover letter upload. In the cover letter, I would advise to detail any extra work experience or a particular skill that you possess that makes you stand out. Don't save it for the interview, make your CV stand out from the others and make them remember you.

Do you have any interview tips?

The video interview was followed by the offer of an assessment day with an interview. The video interview was tough with 7 questions, 1 min to prepare and 30 seconds to answer. Make sure you know exactly why you are applying for this job and this company, what attracted you to it and what you could bring to the role. Learn the company 'pillars' (their values) and have examples of when you have demonstrated those values either in university/school/extracurricular activities. Questions included: Why do you want to work for Arcadis, Why do you want this job, What could you bring to the role, Tell me about a time you have demonstrated Integrity and what does Sustainability mean to you. For the Assessment day, in-tray exercise followed by a group exercise, the team/staff made it all very simple and made everyone feel comfortable and welcome, I wasn't nervous after I was welcomed in. My interview was long but casual in a sense. It was not too formal, some questions provided by HR and some my new boss has asked themselves. Was made to feel at ease and was able to be myself comfortably. They are looking more at whether or not you will fit into their team than your accomplishments so don't be afraid to be yourself and talk about your passions and hobbies. Remember that if you don't get the job, its not the right role for you and don't be disheartened.
