What advice would you give to someone applying to this role?

Be individual. I often find that there is a tendency with applications to write the same old splurge, so as to come across as a diligent individual who will work hard, and be incredibly productive. Max Fordham look for somebody who will fit into the practice by engaging with others. They really want to see that there is a real person applying for the job, rather than a template from the internet. Somebody with a genuine interest in the construction industry, regardless of experience, willing to absorb the wealth of knowledge within the organisation.

Do you have any interview tips?

My interview entirely revolved about probing my understanding of engineering and physics. For example I was asked to draw a picture of a bike. Then I was asked why I draw it as such. I was asked about how the handlebars work. Why they can rotate so freely but still be structurally sound etc.

There were very few questions relating to previous display of soft skills.
