What advice would you give to someone applying to this role?
To my knowledge, Renishaw take on a good amount of placements/summer students etc. - doing one of these first would be helpful, both for you getting to know them and them getting to know you.

I didn't have an interview; I did a project there and did it well, so they offered me a job based on that.
