What advice would you give to someone applying to this role?

Research the local government system so that you understand the different types of councils and the nature of council mechanisms, such as the relationship between officers and councillors (or "members" as they are known).
Attend a meeting of your local council.
Get experience with a council or local charity, preferably in the area where you would like to work.
Research the competencies the NGDP demands.

Do you have any interview tips?

Brush up on current social policy issues such as: welfare reform, government austerity policies and how they will affect DCLG. Research devolution policy and how central government interacts with local government. Which central government policies will affect local councils?

Consider how your experiences might address the NGDP competencies.

Consider whether central or local government policies are inherently good or bad policies, regardless of their political motivation. Try and anticipate the positive and negative impacts of policies.
