What advice would you give to someone applying to this role?

Focus on why you want to work for TLT specifically. Comment on the types of clients and transactions we've advised on because one of the unique characterisitics of the firm is that we are structured in terms of business sectors, not just legal practices. We are so structured because we believe that gives us a better ability than our rival firms to offer clients very specific and commercially sound advice.

You need to be able to demonstrate you are a creative thinker; someone who doesn't just give accurate legal advice; but can put it in a way that really gets to the heart of the client's problem, and does so in a way that best meets the client's financial / commercial needs. Having an insightful, innovative and passionate (in the right circumstances!) mind set is highly valued.

Finally, being able to demonstrate you're a team player is key. It sounds cliched but this really is a people-based firm where colleagues of all levels and teams of all disciplines work next to each other. There are no partner offices and no set hours. This means everyone is encouraged to help each other in any way they can and this flexibility and dedication are elements the firm greatly prizes, so much so that they're incorporated into the TLT-Way. It's therefore crucial for applicants to be able to demonstrate these skills and to show that, at the end of the day, they're the sort of person we'd like to work with!

Do you have any interview tips?

The firm is currently reviewing its interview process moving from the traditional competency-based, "give me an example of when you acted as a leader/demonstrated team leadership skills" type interview questions, to the more up-to-date strength-based system of questions. These mean that better quality candidates showed reveal themselves to the interviewer more quickly because they are able to develop their answers to the questions asked without prompting - it's more of a discussion about the individual and so puts the interviewee at ease to allow them to perform better and also to allow the firm to get a better understanding of the person in front of them. For that reason, this type of interview is not something a candidate can prepare as heavily for, but I would still advice anyone to have an understanding of their own skills, cv, experience, reasons for wanting to work at the firm and commercially/legally relevant examples from their own lives to hand when attending any interview at TLT. However, as I've already said, our interviews are about the firm getting to know the candidate to decide whether or not they would be a good fit for the Firm. With this in mind, I would remind applicants to try to relax, be themselves, let their personality and qualities come through and also to smile!
