What advice would you give to someone applying to this role?
Research the various law firms thoroughly - be sure that you want to work for a top international law firm and are prepared to meet the challenges this involves (long hours, high pressure etc), and be able to talk about this at interview. Focus on commercial awareness - not just reading up a few business stories on the day of the interview, but following developments over a longer period of time and really thinking about why companies / markets (i.e. potential clients) behave as they do, and, as importantly, how law firms can contribute to this.
Do you have any interview tips?
As above, my interview focused on why I wanted to work for this type of law firm and how the firm fitted in with clients' business needs - commercial awareness was discussed thoroughly. We also covered how the skills I had gained during the course of my degree (in particular research and writing skills) would be helpful as a trainee solicitor. As well as the interview itself, there was also a case study which further tested our ability to provide commercially-focused advice.
