What advice would you give to someone applying to this role?

Do your research. Law firms across the City undertake a very similar quality of work - it's all the big-ticket highly commercial deals that some of the world's largest corporations are involved with. On the face of it, they all seem the same. However, the cultures which develop inside the firms are very different. You should take part in as many open days, vacation schemes and other work experience opportunities as you can. Whilst the firms will use them to assess you, you can also use it as an opportunity to gauge whether or not you could see yourself working there and (if it's your goal) one day becoming partner. When you interview for a position, know what sets them apart from their competitors for you and be able to explain your thoughts clearly and concisely. Commercial awareness is also a must for a future trainee solicitor - read about the firm's recent matters, understand their client's businesses and throw in a bit of general market knowledge for good measure.

Do you have any interview tips?

The interview process has changed since I applied, though they are nothing to be daunted by. You'll be interviewed by senior lawyers (senior associates and partners), but they work hard to put you at ease. You will be asked questions to test key competencies, including your commercial awareness. In the lead-up to your interview, read the financial pages of a good newspaper and keep track of a couple of particular deals that interest you. At some point you will be given the opportunity to demonstrate your commercial knowledge and if you have done the necessary leg-work in advance, it will be your time to shine. The questions you are asked will want to test your thinking, so make sure you can adequately explain how you've arrived at your answer.
