What advice would you give to someone applying to this role?

1) There is more to Hogan Lovells than it being the 'friendly firm' in the City. It is a serious firm with big ambitions. Whilst culture is very important, clients will always come first.
2) Prospective candidates that I meet at law fairs/recruitment events often mention that they are attracted to Hogan Lovells due to its strengths in niche areas (employment, IP, competition, pensions, real estate etc.). Whilst this is true, and those departments are market leaders in their own right, the bread and butter of what we do is Litigation, Corporate and Finance work. I would recommend that you at least express an interest in some/all of those areas in your application.
3) Most importantly - the firm that you start your career with will make a huge impact on your lifestyle, your aspirations and your general perspective on the City/the working world. Whilst the hours Trainees work at Hogan Lovells are far better than some of our competitors, you will often be working late into the night. As a result, it is very important that you choose the right firm FOR YOU. Do your research and if you find that you are having to write things in your application that you don't really believe apply to you just to fit a certain profile, then Hogan Lovells (or whatever firm you are applying to) probably isn't for you.

Do you have any interview tips?

Give two examples of recent events in the City/financial markets that you find interesting (followed by a discussion on why). Note that I wasn't expected to know a huge amount about the ins and outs of what was going on - it was more to gauge whether I was interested in the machinations of the financial world and had commercial awareness.
