What advice would you give to someone applying to this role?

Show an understanding business as well as law - both in terms of the commercial context in which the firm undertakes its core legal work, but also in terms of the law firm as a business in itself - it is not an "ivory tower" organisation but a business that exists to make money through careful client care, strategic positioning in a competitive market, and maintaining a reputation for good advice.

Do you have any interview tips?

I was asked a lot of questions about why I wanted to become a trainee solicitor at an international law firm - these were not always asked directly, but as the reverse of why I did not want to work in other careers ie "I see that you have X skill - have you considered Y as a career" - the interviews were keen to see that I had at least considered other careers rather than jumping straight onto law. Likewise, careful consideration of the types of firms I was applying to was also something the interviewers expected to see and asked a lot about.

Otherwise, my commercial awareness was tested - I was asked a question about recent developments in the firm, and then asked to explain why I thought the firm had taken this route.

As might be expected, I was also asked questions key competencies - in particular about teamwork (the interviewers were keen to see that I did things outside of academic study), ability to work independently or with minimal supervision, and research skills.
