What advice would you give to someone applying to this role?
Don't do it for the prestige of saying you're a "city lawyer." It is important to consider whether you actually will enjoy the work. Research the firm and try and explain why you would rather work here than any other firm.
Do you have any interview tips?
Watch a lot of news/ read papers to improve your "commercial awareness". Interviewers often ask which stories you have been following and whether there are any interesting legal aspects. Try to not go for the super obvious story which is everywhere (eg LIBOR).
Research the firm and try to work out what it actually does. I was asked which departments would get involved in a big M&A deal, and I just started listing all of them because I didn't know what they meant! Work shadowing or work experience, even at a high street firm, is valuable before making applications to somewhere bigger.
