What are the Best and Worst things about your job?

Best

Working with intelligent, dedicated people in a truly meritocratic environment. No matter where you're form or who you are you will be judged only by the quality of what you do.

Worst

This is a problem with law in the City in general but you can never guarantee your leave time.

What is the annual salary for this role?

Starting salary: £39,000 - £41,000

Current salary: £39,000 - £41,000

What hours do you actually work, on average?

Start: 09:30

Finish: 18:48

What advice would you give to someone applying to this role?

There are two key things: tailoring the application to the firm and commercial awareness.

Ensure that you work on getting to know the firm, its strategies, its values, its location(s) so that your application looks like you really know about the firm itself. The people who read the applications spend their lives immersed in the firm culture and will be able to spot someone who has no understanding or only a shallow understanding of the firm.

Commercial awareness should arise naturally from an interest in working in the law/the City. It's as simple as checking BBC/Guardian business news a few times a day and actively considering the likely impact of whatever has happened. After a few months of actively following the business news you will achieve commercial awareness enlightenment.

To improve commercial awareness, I would also recommend buying some shares in a FTSE 350 company or simply conducting paper trades. You'll become a lot more interested once you've got some skin in the game.

Do you have any interview tips?

Be yourself. Follow previous advice about commercial awareness.

The firm assumes that you are intelligent and qualified, at the interview stage they want to see what you're like as an individual and potential employee. Be polite, conscientious and human.
