This week, we take a look at the responses graduates gave us when we asked ‘how long do you intend to stay at your company?’ As we all know, the tradition of dedicating 15 of more years to a firm is becoming less and less popular with younger generations entering the job market, with many keeping on the move to continue their learning and development throughout an industry.

We’ve categorised the responses of thousands of graduates by sector to help you make comparisons, and we’ve seen the sector averages vary from 5.6 years all the way to 12.9 years…

The sectors grads plan to stay in the longest:

1. Property (12.9 years)

2. Transport, Logistics & Distribution (11.5 years)

3. Law (11.4 years)

The sectors grads plan to stay in the shortest:

1. Advertising, Marketing & Media (5.6 years)

2. Charity, Education & Public Services (5.8 years)

3. Management Consulting (6.3 years)

So what makes graduates want to stay with an employer? It may come down to the expected timeframe of key achievements such as international travel (expected in just two years by graduates at management consulting firms compared to 4 years for grads in property), a pay rise, or perhaps the opportunity to manage people (expected in as little as two years by graduates in charity, education & public services).

Let’s take a look at the best and worst things about working in property versus working in advertising, marketing & media;

The property grads say…

‘The people are very friendly and approachable. The longer than average grad scheme allows for greater experience within each department.’ Assistant Surveyor, at Cushman & Wakefield

‘The two year training programme allows me to experience each department in-depth. The process is a lot more complex than I thought so to have the opportunity to work in every department for a period of time really helps to understand different stages. The graduate scheme has been in operation for many years so the current employees are well aware of how to manage our time with them to ensure we gain the most knowledge and experience.’ Graduate Management Trainee, Housebuilding at Taylor Wimpey

‘Savills offer a graduate scheme with rotations every 4 months into varying property services. Compared to other property firms this allows for a wider range of experience in different sectors, which as a graduate is extremely beneficial. It is an extremely large company, which at times can mean you are a small part of a much larger process in comparison to a small firm.’ Graduate Rotation, at Savills (UK) Limited

The advertising, marketing and media grads say…

‘Company culture, interesting clients to work with, each day is different, working with interesting ideas. Elements of admin which (whilst important) can take time away from creative, ideas based work.’ Account Executive , Business Communications at 3 Monkeys

‘Responsibility since day one. No support. No-one has time to develop you.’ Marketing & Sales Graduate, Marketing at RB

‘The team, and the people you work with are tremendously welcoming and great to be around, it makes working not feel like work. There is a lot of work to do, which will mean having to squeeze in gym sessions at lunch as you will be glued to your chair some days.’ Advertising Operations Executive, at Telegraph Media Group
