Application Advice:

Be bright, be positive, learn as much as you can about the Education Sector. RM are a company that believes its strongest asset is its people, replay this back to your interviewer.

Application Advice:

Look at what the job description is focusing on. Is it customer service, technical support, project management? Then, pick out a couple of experiences that show the skills you would expect to use in such roles.

Don't be put off if your experiences are not from IT or Education, as people in the company come from all sorts of backgrounds.

Interview Advice:

Put focus on examples where you can show good customer service, in whatever form. This could be an internal customer, the person who has issued you a project to complete at school or university or anything where you have reacted positively to a request from someone else.

Also, show you can handle complex workloads which have multiple stakeholders. This will demonstrate you have the ability to manage time and communications well.

Application Advice:

As an account manager you need to be very empathetic, driven and willing to adapt to new people, products and scenarios. As long as you show you can be a generalist who can work with anyone yet be just as motivated when working alone, you should do well.

Interview Advice:

Look up the RM Plc financial reports, find out the share price, know what the 5 main product areas are and show an understanding and passion to improve teaching and learning in schools.

Application Advice:

Do your research into RM as an umbrella organisation and then specifically the individual company you are applying for. The first telephone interview is competency based, as well as your research so gives you a great chance if you can nail this interview.

Interview Advice:

Having researched the individual company, make sure you try to keep answers focussed on this area as all are different in their approaches and target markets. Ask good questions, I strongly believe that this gave me a big boost in terms of chances of getting the job as it was a chance for me to show I'd researched and understood the key difficulties facing the education market that I didn't have a chance to mention in the interview.

Application Advice:

Definitely apply, it is a great company to work for and will be a fantastic starting block for your career.

The application process is relatively pain free. An online application, verbal reasoning and numeracy tests, a telephone interview, a face to face interview in their Oxford offices.

Interview Advice:

Telephone interview: very relaxed. Mainly about your work experience, you as a person, and a bit about your knowledge of the company.

Face to face interview: how to do a 30 minute presentation around a scenario I was presented with on the day. Advice is to stay calm and stick to what you know, don't make grand assumptions if you are not sure that they are true.

RM is very much a windows shop, extra experience will help, but experience with Windows Server would be good. Even better, experience with PowerShell and Azure will probably help you stand out from the crowd.

Interview Advice:

You should be comfortable with:
* Working under stress (lots of people from lots of different directions asking for things).
* Prioritising.
* Delegating when possible - you can't do everything yourself!
* Working with hundreds of different types of people.

Be aware that the role is more "social" than "technical".

Find a balance in your preparation between customer focus and business success. It's important to remember that whilst we would like to give customers everything they ask for, this is not financially feasible for the company. Knowing how to prioritise your workload is also important to understand, so include information on your time management skills in your application.

Interview Advice:

Be well prepared. Know about the company's aims and goals. Understand the importance of customer focus. A good knowledge of how RM fits into the overall IT for Education industry would be beneficial. Prepare to be assessed on your ability to prioritise.

Application Advice:

The key things to try and bring out in your application and interview are passion for the area and industry you want to work in, communication skills and team work. For example if, within software development, you particularly enjoy web development, database design or security then make sure this comes across. Letting your potential future manager and HR rep know that this is something you are genuinely interesting and passionate about is really important. Communication skills and team work are also really important so if you can include example of these that will really help you as well.

Interview Advice:

My interview was competency based. The main task within my interview was to create a presentation of a time I solved a problem. I was given 30 minutes to prepare for the presentation and 10 - 15 minutes to present it. Following this I was then asked a series of questions based around my presentation and CV. Although the main competency was problem solving it's also important to try and show other skills such as communication and team work within the presentation.

The main advice I would give is that they want to see if you can fit in with the 'RM culture'. As long as you can prove you are not only hard-working but helpful, responsible and commercially aware - you should make a good impression.

Interview Advice:

Be prepared to not be prepared! You may have to do a presentation or role play exercise without previous information to plan - just use your research of the company and common sense to try to workout what they are looking for. Get a good understanding of what the role entails and try to show these traits though previous examples in your career or jobs.

Application Advice:

From my understanding - RM recruits graduates throughout the year. Though it is likely to advertise more roles at the end of each year (as most companies do for grad roles). So if you are planning on starting your grad job at an 'odd time' check the website and speak with HR and they might be flexible enough for you.

Another thing to note is that a lot of graduate schemes have set start dates for their schemes. So for example they may interview in September this year but the start dates may be March next year. At RM it seems this is not the case. I had my interview 2 weeks before the start date for my role. So again (reiterating the above point) - don't limit yourself by not checking if there is flexibility regarding the application process.

Interview Advice:

RM is split into a number of divisions, of which ADS is the one I work for. Do your research into what ADS does. Your interviewer will be your prospective manager (at least this is how it was in my case) - therefore try to impress them with the specific knowledge you have about the particular division you are going for (not just general information about RM as a whole - though this is important information to also know). You can get this information from the company website.

The process I went through was as follows (though it may vary for you):
---------------------
1. Submit CV
2. Phone Interview 1
3. Online Tests (verbal - numerical)
4. Phone Interview 2 (I think this was an oddity in my case as maybe they were still not sure of my fit)
5. On-site Interview 1 (included competency based interview and presentation)
6. Onsite interview 2 (HR interview)
7. Job offer (2 days after the 2nd interview)
---------------------
