What advice would you give to someone applying to this role?

To gain Chartership, you need to ask for the work, as it won't just land on your desk. Talking to line manger and delegate engineer will ensure you get experience you need.
In terms of civil engineering in general, look at sectors that are in demand. At present, railways and water are in demand and it looks likely that roads will be booming soon.
At the same time demand for sectors such as energy (especially nuclear) have dwindled, whilst commercial (high rise buildings) are hit and miss. It is always good to see what is being built at the moment and government policy. Later, you can request to change sector once you have foot in door, but spend at least a year in the sector you start in.

Do you have any interview tips?

Be honest when giving interviews. The interviewers can tell if you are embellishing or fabricating answers. It is better for them to know where you are at that moment in time so that they can determine what they need to do to develop you (e.g. start on design calculations, experience on site).
