Enthusiasm and drive are an absolute necessity - you need to show that you would take initiatve when it comes to progressing yourself and your career. It helps if you can bring practical examples in to your application and give evidence to back up characteristics you claim to have. A 'hands on' approach to the application will match the 'hands on' nature of the job.
