What are the Best and Worst things about your job?

Best

- You feel listened to and your thoughts/feedback is valued, not just by your direct line manager but even by the company directors at the very top. They join meetings 2-3 times a year to give a bigger company update but there is also a page in which you can submit your feedback to the company's Head of People and you receive a response within a couple of working days.

- There is clear career progression. I joined the company as a 16 year old on a part-time tutor role whilst at college. I grew to love my job and wanted to continue to climb the company. I expressed this to my managers at the time and they aided my development with this, allowing me to shadow what their role is and adding additional responsibility to my role.

- The training is of a very high standard. The company have an in-house L&D team that deliver classroom trainings and virtual trainings. I like having the opportunity to assign myself on to these as and when I feel applicable but line managers also pass on their recommendations. The company primarily follow a 70/20/10 model of on the job training, utilising a feedback culture with others, and then external/formal training. I am currently doing a level 6 diploma in management and leadership practice and a lot of the 'top managerial tips' I am learning about, I have already previously learnt through Explore Learning.

Worst

-Working hours/days. Due to working in the online department, the company operate 7 days a week. As a result of this, I am on a Tuesday-Saturday rota. Traditionally in the company, once you became a more senior manager, you would move to a Mon-Fri work pattern. However, since the pandemic, this is yet to return and having discussed this with my line manager, this is currently not going to return for the foreseeable future. As the nature is education, it does result in week-day working hours being 11:00am-8:00pm. This can impact family time due to working late.

-Pay. Whilst I am happy with my currently salary and do the job more out of the enjoyment than the monetary factory, I do wish that pay rises would be higher. I feel the salary is a 'glorified' graduates pay. I don't feel it reflects the level of work and responsibilities that you have. Comparing my current pay to the same role in other companies, there is a clear distinction in level of salary. I feel the company invest their money in great tech and people development, but could do with investing more in salaries and bonuses.

What is the annual salary for this role?

Starting salary: £0 - £12,000

Current salary: £29,000 - £31,000

What hours do you actually work, on average?

Start: 11:00

Finish: 20:15

What advice would you give to someone applying to this role?

Research the company's purpose, mission and vision statements. Ensure they align with your own and incorporate this in your application.

Do you have any interview tips?

My biggest tip would be to focus on your 'why' and try to back up your responses with examples/experience. They would have already read your CV to try to move away from this and give a stronger insight as to who you are as a person, who you would be as an employee, and how you could have a meaningful impact within the company.

The interviews within themselves are professional but relaxed. They spend the first 10-15 minutes just getting to know you as a person and help settle your nerves.
