What are the Best and Worst things about your job?

Best

I have some fantastic colleagues in a variety of roles in the company who all support me and are happy to assist me in my learning. I really enjoy working alongside them and using our combined experiences in order to solve problems.

Worst

Studying for exams can be a nuisance as it sometimes means sacrificing a few evenings or a weekends when an exam approaches. However, study days are available within the company and there is enough time between exams to enjoy your evenings and weekends again. Just remember that the exams aren't forever and you will get plenty of time between exams to see friends outside of work.

What is the annual salary for this role?

Starting salary: £23,000 - £25,000

Current salary: £23,000 - £25,000

What hours do you actually work, on average?

Start: 08:00

Finish: 17:00

What advice would you give to someone applying to this role?

Don't be hesitant if you don't have much prior knowledge of accountancy or don't enjoy mathematics. I have learned everything I know from working within the company and through their training; I had not studied a related subject at sixth form or university. You need to have a fundamental understanding of mathematics but to be a good accountant you must be analytical and also be able to communicate effectively with your team and with clients. If you possess these assets then definitely highlight them and use clear examples of them when you apply.

Do you have any interview tips?

Menzies values having a range of different personality types in order to create a diverse working environment where different people bring a wide range of skills to the table. Be yourself in the interview and be sure to ask questions about the company. It does not matter if you do not have any prior accountancy knowledge; show that you are interested, analytical, and work well within a team. Definitely use examples to reflect these skills and do some research on the company values and tie your experiences back to those values as well.
