What are the best and worst things about your job?

There is always someone who will be there to help you, even when you think it is something really small and you should know it. Everyone needs someone to bounce an idea off, to talk it through with someone and solve whatever it is.

There is a lot of support not just from people in your similar role, but also from higher up. They are interested in you, not just your job role.

Office socials can be fun, bake sale days, fruit box deliveries. Flexible working if you need it.

Interview Advice:

Look at the company's core values (typically found on their website) and consider scenarios where each has applied to you or you have applied them. Also, make sure you have a good understanding of what they mean.

In my experience, interviewers like to ask questions around these core values to gauge not only how much research you have done for the job, but also how suited you are to the work environment.

Make sure to research the company and role you are applying for carefully. As cliché as it sounds, showing a level of understanding for the role you are applying for is a mistake a lot of people seem to make when applying.

Make sure to ask appropriate questions, the interview is as much about the employer figuring out why they should hire you as much as why the company is a good fit for you. Try to specify skills you have that will help you in developing the team.

Application Advice:

Don't be hesitant if you don't have much prior knowledge of accountancy or don't enjoy mathematics. I have learned everything I know from working within the company and through their training; I had not studied a related subject at sixth form or university. You need to have a fundamental understanding of mathematics but to be a good accountant you must be analytical and also be able to communicate effectively with your team and with clients. If you possess these assets then definitely highlight them and use clear examples of them when you apply.

Interview Advice:

Menzies values having a range of different personality types in order to create a diverse working environment where different people bring a wide range of skills to the table. Be yourself in the interview and be sure to ask questions about the company. It does not matter if you do not have any prior accountancy knowledge; show that you are interested, analytical, and work well within a team. Definitely use examples to reflect these skills and do some research on the company values and tie your experiences back to those values as well.

Application Advice:

It has changed a bit since I did it. Like with most service companies Menzies want hard working individuals. It is important for you to demonstrate skills through your life experience. If you are looking to apply make sure you are thinking ahead and putting yourself in positions of responsibility and learning from your actions.

Interview Advice:

Research the company to get by, it shows interest.

Have in mind a few questions to cover.

Most importantly hit the competencies. If you can demonstrate that you already are a leader or a team player through your previous experiences, and are able to talk about them clearly in detail then you give a great impression and usually will go far in the interview stages.

Finally smile. An interview is about standing out so be the version of you that you want to be. Don't sit there and expect any qualification or previous experience to put you ahead of anyone else.

Application Advice:

Make sure you do everything they ask and don't be put off by the video application section, it isn't as scary as you think and let's them see what you're like.

Interview Advice:

Be yourself. Unlike other accounting companies, Menzies put a lot more focus on who you are as a person and less on your qualifications and experience (although this is definitely a factor too!). Be prepared for a fairly relaxed but involved assessment day. They may ask some random questions like what would your super power be or what would you do if you had 24 hours to live, don't panic, just have fun with it.

Application Advice:

Try to come across as interesting and maybe a little different, be honest on your application and don't just write (or say) generic attributes that you think the company want to hear. Give examples of times you demonstrated any attribute you do mention.

Tell the interviewer/ reader of your CV what really interests you about / how you became interested in the accountancy profession and the role you are applying for.

The application form was not as overwhelming as an application form for other accountancy firms I applied to. The one bit of advice I would give is to breakdown the application form into small chucks just to ensure you are fully concentrated on the application form and do not miss anything out or miss read a question.

Interview Advice:

The worst thing to be is nervous, you will not give the best account of yourself. An interview and assessment day process works both ways, it is difficult to have that feeling when they don't come around often as a graduate but it is a good chance to find out what actually is involved in the day to day of the job and if you can see yourself fitting in.

You don't have to come across as it has been your life long ambition to do accounting as for the vast majority this is not the case and it will probably be the case for the interviewer, but you need to have a clear explanation as you why you want the position and what it is about the company you like and not come across as if this is just one of many speculative applications you have made.

Interview Advice:

Be sure to know your C.V. inside and out! Don't rely on bringing your C.V to the interview for reference as it won't show quick thinking and reliability. Employers want an answer sooner rather than later and reading through your C.V. infront of them won't help your cause. Questions included, what are my strengths and weaknesses? What motivates me? Give an example in which you have shown leadership? Give an example of when you have had to deal with a tricky client/customer and how did you go about solving their issue?

I think the main piece of advice I could give is to be extremely patient, firstly as it can take a lot of time for firms to get back to you and secondly you may get a few rejections before you finally get an acceptance from a firm, and the key is not to give up.

Interview Advice:

Be yourself, ie. to a large extent don't try and just say what you think the interviewer wants to hear, say your honest opinions and thoughts, and generally you will come across a lot more interesting (and impressive). Secondly, following on from my first point try not to be too nervous, try and treat it as just a friendly (formal) conversation with an acquaintence who is just trying to find out a little more about you.
