Career Sectors and Gender

Women hold less than a third of all graduate roles within the Construction, Engineering and IT sectors. This conclusion was drawn from a survey conducted by TheJobCrowd, investigating the various factors affecting a graduate’s choice of sector and organisation.

See below a list of the career sectors we covered, ranked by the proportion of women holding graduate positions within them.

  1. Construction & Civil Engineering – 18%
  2. Engineering & Manufacturing – 22%
  3. IT & Telecoms – 32%
  4. Property – 36%
  5. Energy & Utilities – 37%
  6. Banking & Finance – 38%
  7. Insurance – 39%
  8. Management Consulting – 40%
  9. Transport, Logistics & Distribution – 40%
  10. Accounting – 41%
  11. Scientific Services – 51%
  12. Consumer Goods – 52%
  13. Law – 57%
  14. Advertising, Marketing & Media – 62%
  15. Charity, Education & Public Services – 62%
  16. Hospitality, Leisure & Tourism – 63%
  17. HR & Employment – 64%
  18. Retail – 71%

It can be seen that graduate roles in 60% of these sectors are disproportionately held by men, while Construction & Civil Engineering is the most heavily skewed by gender.

It is important that graduates consider the suitability of various career paths when planning their futures. Considering the gender imbalance in various sectors, it is crucial that students have access to advice and resources to better inform their career choices. The National Association of Women in Construction, for instance, offers a wealth of information to help ensure that no women graduates with right skills are needlessly deterred from that industry.
