Application Advice:

I'd review the website carefully, and detail areas of the law/practices that interest you. That way at an interview you can talk about your interests and have a dialogue with the interviewer.

Interview Advice:

Don't be afraid to give your view and ask questions to the interviewer as a response.

Application Advice:

You need to demonstrate your understanding of the commercial aspects of your work - putting your work into context makes you a much more impressive applicant. Leave some additional things to flesh out your interview a bit further, so that it's not just a complete re-hash of your application form.

Interview Advice:

Take your time to respond. The interviewer might help to prompt you for some of the parts, but there's nothing wrong with slowing down. You also need to know your application, and make sure you can extend upon things you highlighted in it.

Application Advice:

Highlight your commercial awareness - it's my top tip for applying to any training contract. Research the firm thoroughly - we take our sector focus seriously, so being able to speak about why that aligns with your interests will go a long way in your application/interview.

Interview Advice:

The interview process has changed since I applied, but I understand that it now consists of a document exercise and a competency interview straight after. I would recommend knowing your CV very well but also thinking of alternative examples from your experience to use (as they often ask you to give an example that's not on your CV!) for the competency interview.

Application Advice:

Be very truthful to who you are when you apply, within reason. Establish yourself in a working-life context and find out what that part of your identity is before you make an application to see if the firm is a good fit for you. If you are straight out of university, or still in university, then try and work someplace for a while to find out what fits best. Don't do it for the paycheck, do it for the experience.

Interview Advice:

Be thoroughly prepared. Don't obsess over first impressions or presentation; be more concerned about intrinsically being ready to the core to answer questions about who you are, how you came to be where you are, why you want to work at the firm and what you are going to bring to the table. Try and obtain legal experience in conducting document analysis and team challenges. Attend open days and/or vacation scheme if you can. If you really want to get in here, apply to a few other places that you can 'burn' to build experience prior to your interview.

Application Advice:

Think hard about the type of law firm you want to work at (e.g. boutique/magic circle/international). Don't take a scattergun approach with applications, as this will be obvious in interviews. You need to be able to demonstrate why you have chosen to apply to a particular firm.

Interview Advice:

Make sure you have a wealth of examples to draw upon to make your answers interesting and to help you stand out. Try to tailor the discussion to draw out your strengths and anything which sets you apart from others.

Application Advice:

Think seriously about whether you are willing to have an unpredictable work schedule for your whole career. Working until 8pm may not sound late but when that is an average day, when you might not be allowed to take bank holidays or when you are expected to check your work blackberry all weekend it can quickly seem like all you do is work. If you don't really enjoy law and really want to work for an international firm then look for options at smaller firms. The pay may not be as good but you will get more responsibility, more credit and more time to spend outside of the office!

Interview Advice:

Know your CV inside out and expect to be questioned on it. Your level of knowledge about the firm is tested throughout the application process so do thorough research before hand and make sure you are up to date on big news stories, including financial news so that you have something to talk about on the way to the interview room or know what the interviewer is referring to.
