National Gas is the backbone of Britain’s energy system today. We are proud of our role in transporting gas to power stations, major industries, storage facilities, more than half a million businesses and around 23 million homes. Our organisation comprises three businesses:

  • National Gas Transmission owns and operates the high-pressure national gas network (National Transmission System) that transports gas quickly and safely to wherever it’s needed in Britain.
  • National Gas Metering manages and maintains millions of gas meters throughout Great Britain.
  • National Gas Services provides nationally important pipeline repair and maintenance services to ensure the gas keeps flowing.

Together, our track record of innovation combined with our expertise in operating critical energy infrastructure enable us to play a key role in the UK’s transition to a clean energy future.

General/ overall skills are important alongside knowledge. My current role has included a lot of adapting to new experiences and being proactive to learn.

Interview Advice:

Being dynamic and adaptable are traits that are vital in my role now I work for the company. During the interview process, how you approach a problem and find a solution (either as an individual or within a team) is a big part of my current job and I feel this was reflected during the interview/ assessment stage. Being your authentic self is a big part of the company culture, approach the interview with that in mind.

Application Advice:

It's always a good idea to do your own research on a company before you apply for them, for yourself and to show to the company that you are invested in them.

Interview Advice:

As well as researching the companies to learn about what they do and some key projects (especially regrading hydrogen at NGT), it's also always good to research a company's key values. At NGT these are simplicity, progress and ownership. It is likely you'll be asked about these in your interview (i.e. name a time where you had to use one of the key values).

Application Advice:

Research the company in detail and try to gain an understanding of energy/utilities in the UK generally (don't need to be an expert but it should be evident that you've spent some time looking into the company and its latest publications across the website and LinkedIn).

Interview Advice:

National Gas struck a good balance between formality and comfortability in the interview so be yourself, don't be afraid to show some personality (without deviating from questions), and think of questions you can ask the interviewers such as about progression opportunities, internal training, challenges of the role etc.
