What are the best and worst things about your job?

I love that it is a 9-5 but not in the conventional sense - every day I drive into a Theme Park, so during open season I can hear people out of the window having a great time and making incredible memories. I love that my workload is massively varied and there is never a day I am just sat at my desk. And I love that everyone who works for Merlin has the same desire to get stuck in and help one another - one of my favourite memories so far has been the whole of the marketing office going out one afternoon to help decorate 150 Christmas trees!

Application Advice:

Be yourself - not what you think they're looking for.

Interview Advice:

If you're excited about the work and the brand you'll be fine. Again, be yourself, not who you think they are looking for. As this is an entry level position, they aren't expecting you to know everything, but they're expecting you to be willing to learn everything.

Application Advice:

Merlin is driven by its people, show who you are and what motivates you! I'm not sure there are many companies that encourage you to really embrace who you are and to channel that passion into your projects.

Interview Advice:

Have tangible results, examples and case studies to talk about. It's great to talk the talk, but prove you can walk the walk and back up your claims & experience with evidence of your genuine contribution.

Cut through the waffle and have your answers down to a tee, succinct and sharply summarising what you bring to the table.

Application Advice:

Think about the things you are passionate about and the unique skills you have developed and how they might translate to some of the company values Merlin holds in high regard. For me, I have worked in hospitality for 10 years prior to being successful for this role, so I evidenced how my experience has given me great foundations to understand what customers want, which is obviously a huge part of the Merlin brand.

Interview Advice:

Think about all the different skills you have and how might you apply these to different questions you may be asked. I was asked to explain why I wanted to work in Marketing, why Marketing at Merlin (so learn as much as you can about the company!) and what skills I thought I had developed through working in Hospitality that might help me become an excellent marketeer.

Application Advice:

Be yourself, be honest, think about why you would be good in this role.

Interview Advice:

Again, be yourself. They look for a certain type of person, you have already been successful based on your experiences and qualifications.

Application Advice:

Look at the competencies and the values of Merlin and how you exhibit these values.
You will have online tests to complete so practice these (e.g. maths and verbal reasoning) before sitting the real thing.
Video interview - make sure you give plenty of examples and explain yourself fully

Interview Advice:

You have a large group task before a 1-2-1 interview. Get as stuck into the tasks as you possibly can as it will give you an idea if the job is for you and whether you are inspired by the work that you have to do. You don't need to be the loudest person in the room (I'm certainly not) but you do need to contribute and show why you are the right person for the job. Make sure that you get your point across but also listen and include people to join in.
The 1-2-1 is usually with quite a senior member of management within Merlin but just don't let that intimidate you. Make sure you have lots of examples to back up why you are the best candidate. Most of all relax, and enjoy as it's a good fun day. Take advantage of the alumni graduates who come and visit at lunchtime and ask them plenty of questions.

Be honest and humble, but also make sure you communicate your best qualities across effectively. Showing you are a team-player is advantageous.

Don't worry if you didn't necessarily study business management or marketing. Merlin is filled with people from all different backgrounds.

Interview Advice:

The video interview and assessment centre are a good way to show how you would fit in to Merlin's corporate culture. Study Merlin's values and make sure you incorporate these.

Don't get intimidated by the process, the competition, or the interviewers. Prepare ahead of time. Communicate yourself effectively but also remember to be a team-player.

Application Advice:

Be honest. Be smart. Make sure you know a bit of basic math and puzzle-solving skills. Be professionally dressed even on the recorded Skype interview.

Interview Advice:

Be willing to work in teams and to take on tasks that don't seem directly geared toward the job you want. For example, if someone needs to work on a finance section but you want a marketing job, then show your diverse skill set by doing a bit of finance and contributing creative ideas like a marketeer. Think of any question you might be asked about your project/presentation and have an answer ready. Part 1 is working in a bigger group and time is a big crunch, so be careful. Part 2 is working in a smaller group, so make sure to flush out your ideas more fully and be ready to actually present to the interviewers. And be social at the lunch - make sure they know your name.

Before applying for this graduate programme, you need to ensure that you are able to relocate. This graduate programme gives you such a great opportunity to experience different people, and cultures both across the UK and the globe - but if you aren't able to relocate it may not be for you.

Interview Advice:

Be yourself - and do your research; know the brands that make up the Merlin Entertainments estate, but don't be too 'showy' if you do know your stuff! The interview consists of group and individual assessments - so be prepared to think strategically.

Application Advice:

Only apply for this job if you are flexible and are looking for a challenge. If you do not mind not knowing what the next day, month, year brings, this might be the right job for you.

Interview Advice:

Just be honest about what you are looking for and what you like or dislike in a job. Pretending to fit this position won't help you because it probably just ends up in you not finishing the program.
Show them you are eager to learn, open for challenges and flexible in what you are doing and where you are going. And most importantly - show them that you do it all for the love of fun!

Application Advice:

Consider your versatility and flexibility as you will be moving around the country or perhaps internationally every 6 months. The more willingness to change, the more opportunities you can surround yourself with.

Interview Advice:

I would say two really important things here are to read up on the company's strategy and vision from the published financial reports. Secondly, and probably most importantly, be yourself! If you are not yourself, a) they will be able to identify that and b) you will struggle to really fit the Merlin culture if it doesn't come naturally.

Application Advice:

Express your passion for the company and role. Make it known why you think you can do the job better than another person and have confidence!

Interview Advice:

Application Advice:

Take your time and make sure you're really thinking about how your answers fit in with the culture of the company. You should never apply for a graduate scheme if you haven't at least researched the company values. Merlin holds its core values in high importance, so if you want to be successful, your application needs to reflect that you share that view.

Interview Advice:

Be yourself and just make sure you know the core basics about the company if you're an external candidate or even internal. You don't need to know every location of every attraction but at least knowing most of the brands is a must. I grew up around a lot of the attractions so I could add personal insights into my interview which I think helped. The questions I had were all competency based so as long as you have prepared answers for any question that could come your way, you should be prepared.

Have fun with it. It won't be like any other interview you've ever had, so just go into every task with an open mind and laugh along the way. The interview is as much about your skillset as it is about how you'd fit in with the company culture.

Application Advice:

Spend time on it, don't rush anything.
Answer honestly and don't try and overthink the process.
Practise for the online tests, you can find loads of examples online.
If this is your number 1 grad scheme (which it should be) then apply to others before so you understand the process; if you're not used to this kind of application it's good to have a feel for it before you start it.

Interview Advice:

Be yourself, it's very quickly noticeable if you're not!

Prepare and read up knowledge about the company because
a) how can you even know you really want to work for a company if you don't know them and
b) how are you going to convince the company you want to if you don't know yourself

You don't need to sit knowing the exact locations of each attraction but knowing what brands are within Merlin is a good start.

I was mainly asked competency based questions in my interview e.g. give us an example of when you have been creative
give us an example of when you have gone above and beyond for a customer.
Always try to give work based examples.
You can find competency question examples all over, so think of examples for those questions and be prepared to think on your feet.

Merlin is a company based upon the love of fun - be yourself and show your personality. Merlin is strong on its company values and ethics, each graduate possesses the values in some shape or form!

Interview Advice:

Be professional but also be yourself, we are not a 'suit and tie' company, but we are extremely professional at what we do. Merlin is fast paced to keep up with our competitors (or be the competitor!!), be prepared to answer questions quickly and be put on the spot.
The AC lasts over two days, and is a mix of small group assessments and a one-to-one interview. There is lots of opportunity to show your personality, but Merlin is all about fun so the AC is a lot less daunting than over FTSE companies.
Network within the assessment centre, and be memorable - you never know you might work for your assessor one day!

Research the company

Be confident in yourself. Merlin are much more interested in if you are the right personality fit for the company. Obviously you will need to show off your skill set but the scheme is set to train you over the 18 months. However if you are fun, outgoing and interested in this industry they will be looking for that to shine through.

If you make it to the final assessment centre, throw yourself into all the tasks and get involved. Network with all the assessors and make sure to talk about Merlin but all dont be afraid to make the conversation personal too (your hobbies, travel experience, etc) If you make a mistake during the tasks dont let it put you off, it is much better to show you can recover from the mistake!

Application Advice:

Show passion! Merlin Entertainments is built by people with a real desire to create memorable experiences for both guests and employees alike. It is a really fun, fast-moving environment so people with a positive attitude and desire to get stuck in and try something new go far. It is also important to show evidence of leadership skills and initiative. Accelerate has been designed to develop Merlin's leaders of the future, and a lot of responsiblity is placed on the graduates to make the most of each placement. There are SO MANY opportunities for learning and development, so you need to be the kind of person willing to seek out new challenges and really make a difference to the business.

Interview Advice:

Be yourself! The interviewers primarily want to get a sense of whether you will fit into the Merlin culture and also if you are someone who will be able to influence the direction of the business in the future. Be confident, friendly and show everyone what you are about. A little piece of advice - talk to the other candidates and assessors when you get the chance. This sounds fairly basic but relationships are really important within Merlin so being someone who is not afraid to introduce themselves and build a rapport will go a long way.

In terms of the actual interview, prepare plenty of answers and examples to general leadership and business style questions as these are of course a fundamental requirement for the job. Make sure that you know about what is happening with both Merlin Entertainments and the leisure industry as a whole, and also be prepared for some questions that will help reveal your personality. Have a think about areas that you need to grow in and be honest about how you would develop yourself to be successful.

Oh and one more thing - have fun!!
