Bear in mind there are far more people submitting an initial application than there are jobs available. Take your time and don't do anything silly that'll get you screened out before you have a chance to show yourself off in later stages. Read everything twice, and think about how you can demonstrate not only your technical skills but also your personality through your answers.
Interview Advice:
Don't focus on the industry specific knowledge when preparing for interview. A deep technical foundation is more important, because everyone is very willing to teach you the petroleum bits on the job. If you have a fundamental understanding of the principles which guide earth processes, and an attitude that you're willing to learn, that is more important. I would also advise checking out the five company values - you'll need to fit them to fit in here.

Ensure that you have an understanding of the scale of what BP does, and demonstrate how you align with its values - these are upheld throughout all of the business, they are not a corporate cliche.
Interview Advice:
For the personal interview, ensure that you have personal and honest examples of where you have demonstrated alignment to BPs values.
For the technical interview, make sure you know the basics (1st and 2nd year) within your field, and understand some of the detail of the function/role you are applying to. Great if you can also link your experience to a challenge BP faces.
For the assessment centre, there is no real preparation required. Just be relaxed, listen carefully to all perspectives, and show drive without dominating people. Ask the most quiet person in the room for their opinion; sometimes it is the most valuable.

Also useful is knowledge of the oil & gas industry as a whole and the other parts of the business apart from the one you are applying to.

Technical questions about the nature of source, reservoir and cap rock. Questions about my degree (eg. mapping project). Shown pictures of core and seismic cross-sections and asked to describe reservoir/geology.

Ensure you have something in your CV that makes you different. A lot of people will be coming out of university with a degree - what makes you different to them? Do you have any relevant work expereicne or life experience?
When submitting your online application, try and gear your answers towards the 5 values of BP - safety, courage, excellence, respect and one team. Try not to be generic "I played rugby and was part of a team"... try to be different and show how you used a combination of the values to succeed.
eg. When working in a project team, you showed courage to question a group decision which lead to a change in approach and ultimately to winning a prize (excellence)
Interview Advice:
Do not feel you need to have in depth knowledge of specific BP examples or of the oil/gas industry. The interviewers want to see how you apply yourself and how you solve problems.
In the technical interview you will be given 2 scenarios to work through and discuss. If successful, you will progress to an assessment centre. You cannot prepare for the assessment centre, other than thinking through the problems presented logically. All of the stages are designed to test how you apply yourself - not to catch you out.

There are a number of steps starting from an online application and going on to an interview then assessment centre. Take your time with the application form, better to spend five hours on one form than five hours on five forms - it will show.
The majority of graduate jobs go to people who have done internships so I couldn't recommend this more.

You will be asked about what you wrote on your application form, so be sure to remember what that was! Be clear with answer about what *you* did/contributed, and try to have a couple of 'back up' examples to hand as well for the inevitable 'can you think of any other times when..." type question.

There were two interviews (face to face) - a competency based one and a technical one. the competency one was more of a guided conversation about the comments you put in your form or CV rather than direct questions like I had seen elsewhere.
the technical one was quite simple, and was clearly aiming to show that you can use engineering judgement and awareness of the subject to apply to various industry problems, rather than just recite equations.
There was also an assessment centre, which had numerous group-based tasks such as presentations, negotiations, interviews etc all based on a case study.

Be honest, down to earth and engage with the BP employees interviewing you. Get as much information out of the BP employees as you can, that will help you work out if they are the kind of people you want to work with. Have a basic understanding of the industry.

Do NOT complete your application in one day/one sitting. Print it off, type your answers to each question, get someone else to review it, preferably 2 people.
The recruiters can tell how much time you have put into it...
Also, when picking examples, think about what will make you stand out because there are loads of applications each year!

Tell us a time when you... Situational questions will be asked during the HR interview.
The technical interview consists of scenarios you will be given based on your discipline. In my case i was shown a well drawing and asked for ways i could increase oil production.
The questions will be tailored to what you studied in University not necesarily the role you are applying to, so you should be familiar with them.

Application Advice:
Apply early, and take your time over the application form. It is not unreasonable to spend an hour a day for a week filling out a job application.
Make sure your application "talks to" the company's values.
Write your application in an easy to digest way, bulleted lists are generally better than continuous prose.
Think about competancy style/soft skill questions. Have a number of examples of experiences you can use which demonstarte a diverse range of competancies in different environments.
Remember anything you put in your application is likely to be talked about at interview. Be prepared to expand.

As above, be prepared with a number of examples of experiences which demonstrate soft skill compenancies. Think about key values the company has, eg is teamwork specifically mentioned on their website? Also think of competancies which play to your particular strengths, perhaps you have a lot of experience of leadership, or communicating through public speaking etc. Be prepared for the question about a weakness and how you overcome it.
Technical interviews are not designed to catch you out, revise if it makes you more comfortable but it shouldn't be necessary. I didn't. They just want to find out how much you know, how much you can work out with guidance beyond your current knowledge.
Dress smart, arrive early, be polite and courteous.

Focus on being technically excellent. You can be taught how to apply your knowledge to our particular sector after you join, but if you can't think cleverly and aren't confident on the underlying principles then that's more of a problem. So show off your brain at interviews, not your polish.

I was asked a lot that was relatively curve ball (not having done an industry specific course at uni), but take your time, think aloud, and don't be afraid to say 'I can get to here but then I'm stuck' and ask for help.

Be yourself and like with any role, it has to be a two-way fit. You have to make sure it is the sort of place you want to spend 8hrs a day, 5 days a week. The application process is long but someone has to get a job at the end of it.
If you have the chance to apply and do an internship, it's the best way to try a company out (and they tend to fill the graduate positions from here first).
