Interview Advice:

Learn about and research the company as much as possible. Definitely learn the company values and how you can relate to them. Bakkavor is the only company where I have actually felt that the values mean anything and they do come into day-to-day conversations and tasks. The assessment centre can seem quite gruelling beforehand, but it is one of the most enjoyable I have ever done. Whilst it is a thorough examination of yourself, it still has a very relaxed atmosphere and enables you to really be at your best.

Application Advice:

Bakkavor has a real focus on developing the next generation of leaders, and there are a wealth of passionate people who will support during your graduate scheme and beyond. Graduates at Bakkavor are well valued and given good experience and opportunities to develop, and at a fast rate that matches your desire to achieve more.

I would advise any candidates to be mindful of the unique environment that manufacturing offers, and show a clear and demonstrable motivation to work in the industry, in the area of your choice and to develop and progress at the company. The Bakkavor values are key to everything that we do and the recruitment process will look at whether candidates have the correct behavioural fit for the organisation. Which is a fantastic way of doing things as your graduate peers will all have the correct value set to drive the business in the future.

Interview Advice:

Focus on the values.

Try not to worry or overthink how you answer questions.

Be yourself, the assessment centres aim to get the best out of you.

Throw yourself in and show Bakkavor what your value is to the organisation.

Ask questions, there is plenty of opportunity to do this with current and ex graduates, as well as the scheme mentors, so make sure you get to know as much as possible.

You need to understand that it is a not 9-5 Role, you will more than likely be working on the weekends. i.e. working every other weekend or working one day of every weekend.
Also you do not get a choice on where you are based in 1st year and the location of the sites are more often than not in rural areas. i.e. Lincolnshire.

Application Advice:

The key quality you need to possess is passion for the job and a motivation to overcome obstacles to achieve the right results. Everything else can be 'learnt by doing'.

You must be flexible with your time commitments and willing to move around the country as you will be relocated at least once! I have moved between London, Peterborough and Wigan in my 3 years with the group.

Interview Advice:

Make sure you brush up on your company values and have examples for each of them of how you have demonstrated that value through work.

Also make sure that you are approachable and (if asked) talk about yourself outside of work. The company buys into it's graduate scheme and a big aspect of that is being able to socialise with your colleagues.

- Research the Food Manufacturing industry in the UK, EU and Worldwide to understand the challenges the that food manufacturing faces, and the key issues.

Application Advice:

I feel my application stood out against others because I had done an operational internship with a company in a similar industry - so understanding what would be required was very easy for me.

Do your research, know how Bakkavor works i.e its aggressive growth/acquisition strategy, its decentralised structure (each site is run as an independent business unit complete with their own HR, purchasing, planning and technical departments).

When it comes to the assessment centre, BE YOURSELF. I remember many applicants at mine attending the dinner discussing tips for the following day, while my table discussed the latest episode of Celebrity Big Brother..

Interview Advice:

I was asked on past experiences, what KPIs are and some examples, the general structure of Bakkavor, the role, the importance of health and safety, how many people work for Bakkavor, where the majority of the business is done etc.

Have some interesting questions to ask - no two factories are the same, how do you think that affects the culture? are there any links to be drawn from the culture and profitability? Where are the future targets for acquisitions?

Application Advice:

A different application process to other graduate schemes which I preferred. No long online forms, instead you submit your CV and covering letter to a recruitment agency and they are your first point of contact.

Interview Advice:

Standard assessment centre with various elements. Make sure you know the Bakkavor values inside and out, think about which you are most like and which not. Speak up during the personality questionnaire debrief, if your positive traits are being discussed then stress why you agree and examples of how you act like this, for areas of improvement show how you will overcome these. For development interviews you will have a taste panel task, look at the products that Bakkavor make and think about which of these might come up.

Have the mindset to ask lots and lots of questions, get to know other members of staff to share knowledge and experiences.

Application Advice:

Get hands on and show motivation and passion for food safety and quality. A degree gives you the fundamental understanding behind food safety and food production - but you learn so much more when you are on the job.

Factories can be very diverse places to work with plenty of different nationalities, languages and cultures. It is important to have strong interpersonal skills in order to transfer ideas and systems into real working practices on the factory floor.

Interview Advice:

Always think of examples of 'what you would do when........'

Try to think of previous incidents when things have not gone according to plan, and how you reacted to them. Also try to think of the best achievement in your academic/working career to date. What was successful about this and what did it teach you?

Interview Advice:

The interview is an accessment centre where you will be interviewed but will also be asked to complete other tasks such as team building exercises so the interview panel can see how you work with others.
You will also need to complete tests before you are asked to an interview which helps the company identify the type of person you are.

Interview Advice:

Be prepared to discuss points further following your personaility questionnaire results. It can be easy to sit there and listen to what is being said without feeling the need to respond. Use the opportunity to highlight your strengths that come out of the exercise, give examples of why you agree. For weaknesses which are discussed explain how you are working to overcome them.

Application Advice:

I would advise candidates to research which graduate schemes are available by the company of interest as many of them offer schemes across a wide range of disciplines. I myself applied to a manufacturing scheme as I have experience in this field but following my interviews realised that there were schemes that maybe I wouldn't have been as certain of a role, but that appealed to me much more and I would have rather taken a risk on one of those.

Interview Advice:

For interviews research and learn:

The industry and accountabilities of the role
The company's values and strategy
Your own strengths and areas you want to improve

Apply your own experiences and learnings to these three points in context and all should be fine.
