Here at Explore Learning we believe that quality education for children and young people is essential, and now more than ever, children need opportunities to grow and develop in confidence. That’s why since 2001, we’ve worked with over 300,000 children to achieve their potential, and we have no intention of stopping – our goal is to continue to provide a service which not only impacts young people academically, but also to develop a love for learning.

We care about children feeling confident with their learning, and parents feeling empowered by the curriculum. We care about supporting individuals from lots of different backgrounds to access engaging, inspiring content and meet true role models who act as mentors, as well as tutors. And we care about our people; that they are inspired every day to do what they do, and to bring our mission to life.

I cannot overstate how the company culture really works for us. In the Explore At Home virtual team especially, there is a strong drive towards innovating and pioneering new ideas. The feedback form is open 24/7 for your thoughts, anonymous or otherwise. There are Diversity and Inclusion networks, regular training and many opportunities for internal promotion. What are the best and worst things about your job?

- You feel listened to and your thoughts/feedback is valued, not just by your direct line manager but even by the company directors at the very top. They join meetings 2-3 times a year to give a bigger company update but there is also a page in which you can submit your feedback to the company's Head of People and you receive a response within a couple of working days.

- There is clear career progression. I joined the company as a 16 year old on a part-time tutor role whilst at college. I grew to love my job and wanted to continue to climb the company. I expressed this to my managers at the time and they aided my development with this, allowing me to shadow what their role is and adding additional responsibility to my role.

- The training is of a very high standard. The company have an in-house L&D team that deliver classroom trainings and virtual trainings. I like having the opportunity to assign myself on to these as and when I feel applicable but line managers also pass on their recommendations. The company primarily follow a 70/20/10 model of on the job training, utilising a feedback culture with others, and then external/formal training. I am currently doing a level 6 diploma in management and leadership practice and a lot of the 'top managerial tips' I am learning about, I have already previously learnt through Explore Learning.

Application Advice:

Write down all your qualities on paper!

Interview Advice:

Be yourself!

Assistant Director, Cenre at Explore Learning
Read the full review »

Application Advice:

Explore Learning has a growth mindset - if you don't know what that is, look it up! It doesn't just apply to the students. The most important thing is that you show passion, receptiveness to feedback, and the ability to reflect. Everything else, they are happy to teach you. Your development will be continuous and prioritised. They want to get the most out of you, and they want you to get the most out of Explore. If you're applying for a management position, you will need experience in the role, but you can also promote into management from a tutor position, and a tutor position is entry level. You can go as far as you drive yourself - don't be afraid to show ambition!

Interview Advice:

Interviews are mostly held virtually for this position. Make sure you have a professional background, minimal noise, etc. Show your non-verbal communication skills; really give big gestures and expressions. They will ask about your experience and why you are there, and then probably pinpoint areas they aren't sure of from your application and answers so far. E.g., showtime (when the members are having lessons) is very busy. You have a report due to the finance team that has to be done tonight, but an upset parent comes in while you are working on it. What do you do?

Tip: Consider the structure of Explore as a business. Our members have to come first! And if you aren't sure of the answer, you can always say, "I would ask for advice."

Service Delivery Manager, Explore At Home at Explore Learning

Application Advice:

Start with an awesome cover letter! There's several phases to the interview, but Explore actually do read your cover letter and will ask you questions, so make sure it's relevant, but also gives them a good idea of who you are.

Interview Advice:

You'll have an in-person interview or online interview depending on location, majority being in-person now. This will be with the centre manager and regional manager, likely both of whom you'll be working with closely if you get the job! They're not expecting you to know everything off the bat, but you will need to think on your feet with scenario questions, and to give your opinion on the centre environment/how it runs etc.

Application Advice: Ask about career progression opportunities.

Interview Advice: Sales is a big part of the brand so say you are excited by sales and are performance driven.

Assistant Director, Centre Management at Explore Learning

Application Advice: Do as much research as you can on what Explore Learning is about. Also what each responsibility for your role is and examples of how that would be when you've been hired.

Interview Advice: Be as authentic and genuine as you can be. There is no such thing as a "right answer" (aside from certain questions), so just be you. For every question that you don't fully understand, ask for it to be broken down, examples etc. Always relate your past work to what you're going for now (being a babysitter, nanny, tutor, coach etc is all involving children, so that relates to the role as well).

Application Advice:

Showcase how you can make an impact as an Assitant Director, and what qualities and skills you can bring that will drive performance as a business, as well as providing the best customer service for our families.

Application Advice:

Ensure you thoroughly research what the role actually entails. The role is highly challenging for a number of reasons and the hours are unsociable. Most people in the company will agree that they dont have much of a social life or a work life balance so only apply if this is something you are truly willing to give up.

Interview Advice:

Be aware of the various sides to the role, its not just about education and tutoring, but the role is also largely sales heavy and requires you to have a level of commercial awareness and seasonal trends, so may be worth researching more about this as you will get questions asked about how you can hit your monthly goals.

Application Advice:

Please ensure that you are passionate about the role. It is a difficult job, if you believe it what you do you will love it! If you show this genuine passion and enthusiasm throughout the entire recruit process it will go a long way. Please get as much experience working with children as you possibly can, preferably in an educational setting, as this will prove invaluable. If you do this it will develop your confidence and gain respect from parents and teachers. If you have the opportunity to gain experience in: sales, marketing, recruitment or management too this will help considerably.

Interview Advice:

The whole interview process is very thorough. As long as you can draw on past experiences, recognise any transferable skills and show a genuine passion for the role you should be fine ! The company loves people who are friendly, enthusiastic, likeable and professional. Remember to sell yourself !

Application Advice:

I would say if you are thinking about teaching but maybe don't feel quite ready and you are considering this role- go for it! It is a great experience and allows you to develop other skills and make a more informed choice about whether teaching is right for you. The amount of trainings' you go on also means that you get a real feel for what business areas you enjoy. An amazing first job but you have to be a very motivated and a resilient person, as it can get to you when you have to go off to work maybe on a Saturday or Sunday when all your friends will be out and about.

Interview Advice:

I would say really think about your marketing presentation and research realistic figures as I fell down on this part by being a bit over optimistic on how many trials we would book for my event. In the group activities demonstrate your team work skills but also the ability to be assertive when needed. At lunch they are still observing so don't get too comfortable. One of the people at my assessment day said 'I think you should open a centre near Watford there are loads of 'posh' schools there', this shows a complete lack of understanding of Explore as our most popular centres are actually in quite deprived areas with large ethnic diversity.

Application Advice:

The company really look towards 'people friendly' individuals. A lot of natural confidence! However, it is a heavily sales aspect, monthly targets are in place for sign ups, new members etc. however having said that - there is no immediate pressure or fear of your job depending on it. Pretty soon you find yourself comfortable with it all as a result from working in a close knit team within your centre.

Interview Advice:

Individuality and confidence, lots of it!

Application Advice:

Draw on a range of experiences and skills. Don't focus on one aspect of the role because they are looking for people with the whole package. If you don't have sales experience, think about any situation where you've had to persuade somebody of the benefits of a particular decision. They coach and train you in all the roles so they're looking for awareness of what each aspect of the job will require. Do a lot of research, go and see a centre before applying.

Interview Advice:

Be specific. Give them tangible examples of your experiences in different areas. Be confident and show them your personality. This is such a huge part of the job so don't underestimate it. They want bright, friendly, articulate people so keep your nerves to a minimum and throw yourself in to the tutoring observation. You dont have to teach the kids in the observation section of the interview; talk to them about their day and be generally (and genuinely) friendly.
