Process Leader Quality, Quality at Jaguar Land RoverRead the full review »
Interview Advice:
Learn the JLR competencies available on the careers website, and have pre-prepared examples of where you have demonstrated these in a range of previous work experience, shcool, hobbies etc. At interview, if there is a group work section, make sure that you make yourself heard and offer up an opinion based on both the information given but also be confident to bring up information you may have learnt about the company in your prep.
It is also important to listen to the other members of the group. Identify someone in the group who has not spoken much, and ask them directly for their opinion to give them a platform to speak. Also, don't be afraid to change your initial opinion if other members of the group argue an alternative well. It is better to be willing to change your mind based on the opinions of those in your team, than to stubbornly stand by your initial opinion. There will be no right or wrong answer, you will need to find the best compromise as a team.

Interview Advice:
Research company values, there is a great belief in behaviours rather than competency as a base level of that you must already have, as you've got through x years of college/university. Practice in tray excercises and other fast paced organisational/delegation tasks, in group excercises don't be the forceful one, they're looking for efficient teams that can work together. Try find an answer to situational questions that you can use (...describe a time where you acted well as a team...)

Application Advice:
Try to gather as much information as possible about the roles of each of the departments and the teams within them. JLR is a large organisation and similar roles are available across the different departments, it all depends on what business activities you want to apply yourself to, as to which department/team would suit you best.
Interview Advice:
The process is fairly standard and starts with some online psychometric and situational judgement assessments. Once you reach the actual interview stage, it's an assessment day (half day in reality) that you attend as part of a group. If you've got to this stage things are probably looking pretty good, so try to relax. What is being assessed here is how you work with others and whether you meet the JLR business behaviours (you can look these up). It consisted of a group task and individual presentation about a project, and an individual interview.

JLR value a diversity of skills and experiences. Be honest, write a full and comprehensive CV and read up on automotive industry trends before coming to the assessment centre.
Interview Advice:
In group exercises, JLR are looking for evidence of people skills, teamwork and sharp thinking. You need not go out of your way to drown out other candidates or force your ideas upon them (as some consultancies expect of their candidates). Building a car is immensely complex and demonstrating that you can work well with with a diversity of different people is essential. You will be doing this on a daily basis.
For the 1-to-1 interviews, the best tip is to prepare examples for common competency-based interview questions at home, be aware of the company's recent history and trends in the automotive industry.
If you are applying for a Procurement / Purchasing role, you can't really prepare for the negotiation exercise. Good luck!

Application Advice:
Be patient. The process grinds to a halt for a large number of applicants after the online questions and tests are complete. I personally waited between October and March for any updates other than "we're still sifting through applications". Then March brought an offer of an assessment centre place and things picked up quickly again. Don't worry if you're not processed straight away, there are a lot of applicants.
Interview Advice:
The 3 parts require no preparation ahead of the assessment centre, though it does help to have a few things clear in your head.
Go in knowing a few examples of experiences you have that may be applicable to working at JLR. It's also wise to know why you want to work for us and what you see as challenges for the company. Pretty standard stuff really!
It's also a good idea to flick through the details of any university projects you've completed. What were you doing, why, how did it go. Be honest when you get questioned. If it wasn't perfect that's fine, you've learned valuable lessons.
When it comes to the group exercise, don't try and prove you're better than everyone else by dominating the whole session. You're there to prove you can work in a team, take other information on board and use all your collective knowledge and experience to come to a reasoned decision as a team. The "I know best" approach might see you miss out on a vital piece of information from another group member.
Enjoy the experience, chat to other applicants, they might just be you colleagues in a few months time.

Research about the wider automotive industry and the history and future plans of Jaguar Land Rover. Be passionate about the company and its products. Know what the key values and behaviours that they are looking for and use examples from your own experience to back it up.

Be actively interested and engaged in the car industry - relevant knowledge always impresses. If you can, get some work experience here before applying (just a week or so, nothing too crazy) just to get a feel for that department and meet the managers.

Be prepared, concise, and organised. There will be an emphasis on team working and collaboration between different departments.

Application Advice:
Examine the 'High Performance Business Behaviours' on the JLR careers website. Try and keep these in mind when completing online assessments.
When at university try and get some project and team management experience. These make for excellent conversation which can end up taking a large portion of time in the one-on-one interview (which is a good thing!)
Interview Advice:
Assessment centre structure:
One-on-one interview (1 hour): set of questions on previously mentioned 'High Performance Business Behaviours'. These include; quality, customer focus, project management, team leading, conflict resolution, working with difficult characters, career plan, etc.
Group exercise (1 hour): group of approx. 8 assigned roles for a variety of different departments, (e.g. warehouse logistics manager, company quality, lead engineer, etc.) and then presented with a scenario. The team must discuss their priorities from their own perspectives and then reach a decision on how best to proceed. YOU MUST ABSORB A LOT OF INFORMATION QUICKLY ON THE BRIEFING - READ FAST.
Email tray exercise (45 mins) - exercise in analysing priorities. Multiple choice where you are presented with 20 emails and you must state how you would deal with each situation, e.g. how urgent is it, should I deal with it, should I escalate it to my manager, which departments is this going to effects? Etc. WORK FAST.

The best advice I can give here is preparation preparation preparation. Prepare yourself with answers to competency questions. i.e. Tell me about a time when you had to deal with a difficult situation.
Further to that, you should research about the industry, doing a SWOT analysis would be good. Tell them why you want to join JLR.

Application Advice:
When doing the application I had to do a series of situational judgement tests. What I would say is to make sure you do as many practice ones on the internet as you can first, so you get a feel of what they are like, as they can be pretty tricky. Generally I would just say to use your common sense when answering them, there won't be an obvious right answer most of the time. So just pause and think through each of the options given, don't rush it.
Interview Advice:
If you get to an assessment centre, you've done really well already - more than half of those that attended mine were offered a job at JLR. Throughout the day they are looking for how well you involve others in the team exercise, how driven you are and your knowledge of the company and industry. I tripped up a little in that regard, which frustrated me as I have always loved cars and driving, but luckily I did well in the other areas. Make sure you do some research on any challenges facing the company itself and the wider industry, as well as a little on the history of the company too. If you can show that you know the industry, and understand the heritage of the company and what it stands for, you can't go wrong.
Graduate Engineer, Body Engineering at Jaguar Land RoverRead the full review »
Application Advice:
Just ensure you have researched the company and know your reasons for applying. If you are required to do psychometric tests, practice in advance.
Interview Advice:
The interview was designed to assess the JLR high performance behaviours, know what these are in advance. I had to complete a group exercise, in-tray exercise and a one to one interview. For the group exercise, read your brief and try to make a well justified contribution to the discussion, but don't forget to listen to others!
The in-tray was just a series of emails that I had to read and decide their priority, who I might need to include in communications and so on, as you would expect.
In the interview I would say that silence is not a bad thing. Answer the questions as fully as is required and then be quiet. Try not to waffle and pad out the gaps while the assessor might be making notes.

one of the trickiest parts is to give example of when you've been in a situation where...., so make sure you have an idea of things you've been involved with and how they have benefited you. There may also be some role play, where it is important to remember, it isn't the final solution that is of interest so much as the way you get to it and interact with others.

Application Advice:
When I applied there were no competency-based questions during the online application process, just personal details and information about my degree. When the application was submitted (December 2014), I received an invitation to carry out aptitude and situational judgement tests. With the former I recommend a lot of practice, whereas with the second, I thought it was quite easy, just study JLR's business behaviours to see what kind of character traits and behaviours the company is interested in.
It took quite a long time for the HR team to get in contact (March or even April, I think!) to say I was invited to the assessment centre, which took place mid-May, but this is because of the high number of applications received.
Interview Advice:
As a general rule of thumb, it's preferable to have some relevant work experience to talk about at the assessment centre, so if you can arrange a Summer placement somewhere relevant, I'd highly recommend it.
During the interview you will be asked a set of questions to which you will have to answer with examples; the more you have, the better. Remember with every example to be as succinct and and "to the point" as possible, without beating around the bush. Remember however, to still highlight Context, Approach, and Result (CAR), trying to keep JLR's business behaviours in mind.
Before having your interview try to understand what the department you're applying to does specifically, as you will most likely be asked what your understanding of it is. I recall one of the questions being "if you were in this role, who would your customer be?".
Generally, and for me it was certainly the case, the interviewers are there merely to facilitate, and genuinely try to help you and get the most out of you; if they see that you could be adding something more to the example you're providing, they will ask you for more details, asking questions that actually point you in the right direction.
As for the group exercise, try to drive the group; remind everyone about the deliverables of the exercise and make sure everyone is participating. If someone is a bit shy and quiet, ask them for their opinion and try to engage them, making sure decisions or conclusions are reached through a group effort. Try to take the lead if possible, but equally make sure you're not over-powering; it's very important to listen to everyone's opinion and value it.
The third exercise for me was an in-tray exercise, which involves prioritising a large list of items which you would hypothetically receive at the beginning of the day; just make sure your priorities are correct, with Safety/security at the top, for example. As far as I know, we all had in-tray exercises, but I recall my invitation email suggesting to prepare for online aptitude tests (numerical/verbal/diagrammatic reasoning) as well, so maybe cater for that surprise.

Remember, it is okay to think about your answer, do not feel the need to reply straight away. Interview Advice:
Think of examples of things that you have done that demonstrate the company best behaviours, you can probably find these on the careers website somewhere if they aren't included in the interview pack.
At the assessment centres make sure to be social, don't just sit quiet in a corner as much as you want to, you never know when assessors will see you and the small things can make all the difference. If they have seen you interacting confidently and appropriately with other people outside of the interview then it might go to help in interviews if nerves get the better of you.

Skills can be taught and training can be provided on the job, so this is not as important as having the right attitude, culture and approach to how you work. You must be an effective team player, a pro-active thinker and excellent communicator.
Successful graduate scheme applicants at JLR are all people who can demonstrate ability in soft skills.
Interview Advice:
Assessment centres involve an interview, role-play exercise and a team exercise.
For the interview, be prepared with knowledge of the company and its rivals. Research. Focus on examples of demonstrating soft skills. Well rehearsed, concise answers should be supporting your ability to think on your feet to some unexpected questions. Be confident and enthusiastic. Have a couple of questions ready to ask yourself.
For the role play, think of the kind of questions you will be asked and prepare. Not knowing answers will reflect badly. It's not solely a case of answering questions, you will have to make decisions/recommendations and argue your case. Be confident in them.
For the team exercise, the crucial importance is to deliver the objective on time. The tendency is to discuss for far too long and by the end there is a few ideas and no definitive answer. If the brief asks for 5 points, give 5 clear and concise points. Do not dwell for too long; making evaluated decisions and maintaining progress is key. Ask other team members for their opinions, do not shoot down all ideas you don't agree with.

Have a few questions to ask the interviewer at the end as well. Try and put any prejudices towards other candidates aside as you do the group activities and learn to accept there with be people who want to show off and be arrogant. They are looking for how you respond to these sorts of people and the way you work with them. So don't shy away.
