Network Rail

Graduate Mechanical Engineer, Safety Technical Engineering at Network Rail

Application Advice: Be prepared for a long interview process. It takes a while to get through the number of applicants. The assessment centres are condensed but are less intense than others. They are not designed to make people fail.

Interview Advice: Know your basics and be prepared to think on your feet. There will be railway based questions on topics you are most likely to not know unless you studied railway engineering. Think through the logic of what you are being asked and work it out. They aren't questions you should know the answers to beforehand.

Network Rail

Graduate Project Manager, Infrastructure Projects at Network Rail

Application Advice: I would say try, as best you can, to relax and be yourself. The interviewers are more interested in establishing the type of person you are than your ability to out perform those in your group. Network Rail is by its nature built on collaboration, and team work is valued highly. Having examples of where you've implemented change through working together in a team is invaluable.

Interview Advice: There were questions establishing whether or not you are actually interested in the job you're applying for. You don't need to be a train spotter, but having an appreciation of the impact your work can have will not go amiss. Applying as a Project Manager you'll be joining the Infrastructure Projects (IP) team, so researching some of the projects that have been done recently, like Thameslink (including London Bridge) or the Greater West Programme will go down well.

You can watch short videos featuring employees that outline their job, and it goes on to tell you how far they've progressed to the present day. Research what the company does in the industry and prepare some real-life examples and scenarios to demonstrate your interest and knowledge of the company.

Interview Advice: Be direct, be 'human', and be realistic with your answers when it comes to the competency based questions. Refer to how you handled each scenario by touching upon the CODE as you will be gauged on how much you're showing these values throughout the interview. Don't just focus on one situation or work experience when you are questioned on what you have done, keep an open mind and constantly make an effort to show engagement and interest. In the end that you're not just here for a role but want to make a difference.

Interview Advice: Be honest and genuine. Don't be afraid to ask for a moment to think. Each stage of the assessment centre is challenging but in a good way and you get time to prepare for each section so, use the time effectively and just keep calm and you will be able to answer all of the questions asked. Diageo

BPM Analyst, Finance at Diageo

Application Advice: I believe the current policy is to hire for the person, then the function and then the role. This means that if they like you, but you're not suited to the role then you can still find yourself with a job in another department (as happened to a friend of mine). The flip side though, is that if you're well suited to the role, but you're not the right type of person for Diageo then you won't get any job. Highlight thinks which make you interesting and your connection and / or interest with the industry. Willingness and/or experience of travelling / living abroad is also a plus, I think.

Interview Advice: The key, in my view, is to be collaborative, and somebody that people want to work with rather than trying come across as someone who thinks they're the best.

Gives you a personal insight into the company to see if it is right for you.

Interview Advice: My biggest piece of interview advice would be that during the 2 day assessment centre it is important to remember that you aren't competing against one another for a job. Unipart are unique in that they are not fixed in the number of people they recruit... they recruit exceptional people. This could mean only one from the assessment day, or all 10 for example! Practice competency interview questions and have a range of answers ready to use throughout each stage of the application. Know exactly why you are applying for your role and know why you want to work for TfL! You will be asked this at every stage, so avoid looking silly and prepare a good set of reasons!
