Assistant Manager, Majestic Wine at Majestic Wine

Application Advice: Speak to as many current employees as possible. Do ask lots of questions primarily about the work life balance (especially during busy seasons), coping with unexpected overtime and the frequency of bonuses/perks in their role.

Interview Advice: Let your personality show. Do ask questions of the interviewer about the aspects of the role, their views on the good/bad aspects and the story of how they got to where they are now. It's a good way of building a connection but also finding out if this role is for you.

Application Advice: The job is in essence a good one, even if management and bureaucracy prove frustrating at times. The people you work with are outstanding though.

Interview Advice: Have a base level of knowledge to talk about. They aren't looking for in depth knowledge - that comes with time - but more the ability to make a vaguely coherent sales pitch.

Application Advice: You need to have great customer service skills as the company thrive the most on this. Product knowledge is great, or just a firm interest in wine and spirits.

Trainee Wine Guru, at Majestic Wine

Application Advice: Really think about who Majestic wants working for them. - They are all about the people (their employees and their customers.) Don't focus on what you don't know (I had minimal prior knowledge of wine before I started) but rather focus on what you do have and what you can bring to the company. It is also really important to think about the world of retail and how as a company Majestic can really thrive.

Interview Advice: The interview is more of an informal chat than your standard graduate interview - So relax and just think about what you can bring to the job and what you think Majestic want from their employees.

Application Advice: Visit a Majestic wine store so you can get a feel for the atmosphere of a store and speak to the team to get a few different impressions on the day to day roles within the life of a Majestic employee.

Interview Advice: One of the stand out parts of the interview is being asked to sell a bottle of wine to the interviewer, this is a selling task and not a knowledge based task. Talk about what you have achieved and done on a personal level, any retail experience is really good to be able to reflect back on.

Trainee manager, Hertford at Majestic Wine

Application Advice: Make sure that you visit a Majestic store first before your interview to get a feel for what the company is all about. You don't have to be a Wine expert, but what the recruitment team really like and look for is; an individual with a drive to succeed and a willingness to progress, as well as having a fun and bubbly personailty that you need to get you through the long days. Please note that you are sponsored on to a Wine course, so you have to be willing to learn and study in your own time as well as training for your management position.

Interview Advice: You are asked to sell the interviewer a bottle of wine. They are not looking for Wine knowledge in this task, they are looking at your ability to sell, therefore include things such as, add sales, the free glass hire we supply, the free chiller bin hire, the free delivery and also sale of return and so on. Think outside the box. As our tasting counters in store are at the forefront of everything we do daily, make sure you learn why we have these and its advantages. Why is Majestic different from supermarkets? What are the differences? Tell me a time that you have been creative? Who inspires you and why? Give me an example of a manager you have worked for in the past that inspires you!

Application Advice: Be honest about your wine knowledge from the start. It doesn't matter if you don't know anything, as long as you want to learn, then it's fine. But do at least have an opinion on wine; from the get go people will ask your opinion.

Interview Advice: Be enthusiastic and energetic, because they want that in the stores. You don't have to show leadership skills, just be honest about how well you work in teams, because they become like your family. Look on the website for the Majestic principles, they love it if you know about them before hand.

Interview Advice: The interviewer will present you with a few bottles of wine. They will then ask you to sell it to them. Don't worry if you don't know your wine that much, the point is that you have just used the sales and customer service knowledge you know. Have a quick search online about food matching and recommend some food with the wine (e.g. matching a chablis with fish or pinot noir with game, casseroles etc). They'll also ask you about leadership skills, problem solving and the usual typical interview questions.
