Application Advice: I thought I made a mess of the technical test and was surprised to get a callback. After I joined the company, someone told me that the technical test is about seeing how candidates think - it's not really a pass/fail thing, more like a useful bit of data which they consider alongside the interview.

Interview Advice: Make sure to be really clear about why you want to join the Academy, and why you're interested in a career in tech. It seemed like the interviewers were looking for passion and curiosity rather than advanced coding skills.

Application Advice: Spend some time reviewing your academic and career path until now. Have a clear idea of what you want to do, bearing in mind there are lots of ways to support you on that.

Interview Advice: Challenge yourself with some online coding puzzles. Focus on your reasoning and decisions, instead of the outputs. Practice with a relative or friend. You can also record yourself solving a coding challenge -- being verbal and explaining to the camera why you're doing 'this or that' is something you'll find hard but will be rewarding once you're in a different setting. Spend some time thinking about what you value in a company's culture.

Application Advice: Make sure you link your skills to consultancy and give examples. Also, make sure you talk about your knowledge/experience of the more technical IT aspects (i.e. the industry and key parts of that). Since working here, I have helped out with recruitment and triaging the CVs, so I know that as long as you communicate well and cater your application to the company and job role, you have a good chance, regardless of what you've studied.

Interview Advice: Don't give up even when the questions are hard - remember that they are trying to see HOW your answer, not necessarily WHAT you answer. You will be asked questions about what the company does and slightly more technical questions about what that means, so be sure to do additional research on that!

BJSS

Software engineer, Technical delivery at BJSS

Application Advice: My experience of the application process was via a cv sent to graduate recruitment by a friend who already worked for the company. My cv was a skills-based cv with some explicit details about past employment. There was a following phone interview (mostly just a chat with graduate recruitment) then an online technical exam (timed coding exercise). I wasn't familiar with the languages offered in the coding exercise, but really it's principles being assessed. Don't feel disheartened if your code fails to "pass" an online assessment.

Interview Advice: I did an assessment day which included technical exam, group task, interview and pair programming exercise. - In the group task, read all the info and don't try to present something the 'customer' didn't ask for. Be confident in your presenting at the end and be prepared to answer questions about your decision making. - The technical exam was in your language of choice (from a specified list), and I wasn't particularly familiar with the language at all. In this case it was really important to try and answer as many questions as possible. - The interview included going through some of the errors/misunderstandings of the technical exam, which was great because it offered a chance to ask questions and also to prove the ability to learn quickly. I was also asked some general questions relating to info on my cv. Others were asked to explain solutions to problems on a whiteboard, but I dodged that by talking about the exam for quite a while. (Maybe less likely if you were already proficient in the language of the exam) - The pair programming was an exercise about building a specific tax calculator. Again the language wasn't one I was proficient in, but the supporting dev was very relaxed about it and encouraged Google as a problem solving aid Very importantly, I was never made to feel lacking by any of the interviewers/assessors because of my lack of programming skill.

Application Advice: Make sure that you read up on the company and understand the nature of how a consultancy operates compared to a more traditional software development company to ensure it is right for you. Understanding the application and proving to yourself that you fit the requirements will definitely save you any stress later during the interview process.

Interview Advice: Brush up as much as you can on your coding for the technical aspects of the interview process. Overall, be honest and treat the interviewers as friendly people who want to see you succeed. They are people just like you and I who want to see that you are not only proficient technically, but would also be a joy to work with. They want to see you succeed so being respectful and putting in the required preparation is key to this.

Application Advice: Look into the company and pick out specific things they've done or offer (like having a charity of the year they raise money for) to mention in your cover letter as part of the reason you want to work here. This shows that you've done your research and really want to work for them and goes a long way. Also, for the video interview, try and be yourself and show your personality because unlike lots of other companies, actual people watch each of the video interviews and showing your personality will go a long way even if some of your answers aren't the best.

Interview Advice: Just be yourself. I know that sounds like cliché advice, but Ten10 really value the soft skills a person has and their ability to interact with others, as you'll be going into a consulting role joining teams of people you don't know. Let your personality shine through, don't be scared to ask questions. There were 2 interviews, 1 was more of a personality interview with other applicants. It was just a case of ice breakers to see how you interacted with other people, just try to be friendly and chatty. The second was a more technical interview, asking about some skills and things from your CV, as well as what interests you about technology, something you really learned about technology, why you want to work for Ten10, etc. There was also a situational question about if you were on a project and didn't have enough time to finish it, what could you do? So things like, offer to work overtime, ask people on the team to share the workload, request pushing back the deadline or suggesting a sequential release of smaller parts of the project, try to automate tedious manual steps to save time, etc.

Interview Advice: Make sure you prepare for questions like 'name a time you have', and use the STAR method to respond. Research the company values, as they will normally shape questions around these, to assess whether you are a good fit for the company. Always prepare some questions at the end to ask the interviewer.

Interview Advice: The interview is friendly and informal, so just be yourself and they'll see if you fit in with the company. There are no trick questions, but there is one semi-difficult roleplay question where you pretend to be a consultant who needs to discuss with a client about a project which has fallen behind. Capgemini UK plc

Salesforce Marketing Cloud Consultant, Salesforce at Capgemini UK plc

Application Advice: Find a referral. Reach out to someone from the DU on LinkedIn or find another graduate/someone who'd be willing to be your referral. Goes a long way to pushing your application to the top of the queue and making it visible. There are plenty of recruiting incentives within the company, so people will jump at the chance to referr a bright graduate. Application consists of multiple stages and can feel quite rigorous. Be thorough with your paper applications when applying online. Try to have a referral if possible, but not necessary. Situational Questionnaire is hard to prepare for and was mostly a common sense thing. Some specific questions required some degree of math (might want to remind yourself what the formula is to calculate compound interests and figure out original price values after tax if you've forgotten). You might then have an interview or an "online interview" and assessment centre activity. Online interview is not with a real person; its a set of pre-recorded questions with which you have 2 minutes to answer. Very rigid and not too natural, but the website has a "practice interview". Try to pocket answers for common questions and make them fit within a 2 minute time limit. Assessment Centre will be group activities. Some groups will do better than others - and your group might not be the best - but that's fine. They're looking for both individual performance and cooperative skills. Have good chemistry with your team and highlight your personal qualities. The full interview may happen if there are no Assessment Centre sessions running at the time or in your vicinity. Look at Interview Advice detailed for help with this.

Interview Advice: Although I applied for a specialised role (CRM), I had made it clear from the beginning of the application process that I was not familiar with the platform. They were fine with this. Questions revolved mostly around soft skills and process knowledge: How comfortable are you with presenting? If a team member is failing to meet expectations, how do you handle them? Are you familiar with Agile Methodology? Do you have past experience that you believe is relevant for this position? Why apply for this position in particular? General consultant-skills related questions. Even if you're not familiar with tech/IT (which I was not, coming from a humanities), showing an understanding of consulting skills and making sure to bring on how your past projects/experiences support the skillset they're looking for should be enough. Also, be creative. The best way to show you're comfortable with presenting is getting up and giving an actual presentation then and there. If they ask about Agile then explain the ways you use sprints and kanban boards in your own self-improvement.

Software Engineer, Development at CoreFiling

Application Advice: I would advise any applicant to a developer position to mention all Java and Node.js related frameworks they know, and how they have used them in similar scenarios. In my case, Java (5y+ of experience) and Docker (3y+) were key to bring to their attention.

Interview Advice: Most of the interview was carried out with exercises on a whiteboard. Starting with an implementation of a simple mathematical problem (calculate Fibonacci numbers) in a programming language of my choice, and continuing with different ways to implement it (iterative vs recursive) as well as calculating its complexity and improving its performance. Later we continued with a similar problem involving tasks to be executed with dependencies between them. I would advise checking some of the typical simple problems.

Junior Consultant, Software Testing at Ten10

Application Advice: Apply as soon as possible as it is a simple process and a quick response.

Interview Advice: The first stage of the application process is the video interview where general questions will be asked (e.g Tell me a fun fact about yourself). For this stage, all you need to do is to be relaxed and enjoy the process. You will be mostly answering questions about yourself and general questions like "What is software testing?". The next stage is the telephone interview, which is a conversation with our Head of Graduate Recruitment where you find out more details about The Academy and you get to ask questions. The interview is very well structured and the company has the chance to know more about you and you get the chance to know more about them. The third step is the assessment day where you get to meet people from the company and speak with directors and previous academy members. Even if there is a long day, it is also a fun day. People are making you feel as you are already part of the company. The day is split into two parts. In the first part, you will have three tests (very easy test, nothing very technical) and in the second part you have your interview. Throughout the day, the recruitment team is entertaining you with Lego and different fun activities that will help you get to know others. You have to just enjoy yourself and relax!

How well you communicate is important to the role, so the ability to answer the questions within the timeframe in a friendly, relaxed manner is important. Reach out to the academy support team if you have questions, they are very helpful, and as a bonus, it doesn't hurt if they can already place a name to a friendly conversation.

Interview Advice: Assesment day - The interview is pretty standard questions, so just practise those. Research of the industry is important. The rest of the day is monitored team based games and interactions, and some logic tests. Ask the hiring contact for example logic quiz if you feel unsure of these, I was sent a link to a similar set of quizzes. In the group section just be friendly and not too quiet.

Interview Advice: Really try to understand what the company does, and what asset finance is. I would recommend getting on LinkedIn and seeing if you could get a coffee with someone who works here prior to an interview. They are big on cultural fit as well as potential, but you don't need to have any sales/IT experience so far.

Interview Advice: Try and reach out to people on Linked in who have done the associate programme for advice. It is a long process and the assessment centre is very intense and tough, but with the right advice you will be able to excel. They are looking for personality and potential, so really do show the best of who you are. Definitely know the main things about the company, i.e core strategies, all of which can be found on the website. Also, research the company values as these are talked about a lot within the company and at the interviews. Assessment includes dinner with company execs and leadership, so make sure you have done a bit of linked in research before hand.

Put some effort into making your CV readable, and try to show off the things that make you a good candidate for our work. Also, don't be put off by the "aptitude test". Interview Advice: It's an assessment day with a chance to ask both HR and someone in your field questions. There's a 1-2-1 interview and a team assessment as well. The hardest question I was asked was something like "Can you give me an example of a time when you've used enterprise data management tools?" or something similar. I didn't understand what it meant and the interviewer could only explain the question so much (for reference examples of databases, data visualisation or ETL tools were what he was looking for). Application Advice: Pay attention to spelling and grammar. Use the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) methodology when answering video interview questions. Use recent experiences as examples where ever you can - even if they didn't happen in work, an account of how you dealt with a situation while travelling or in uni will be more effective than talking about being a prefect in junior school. Answer the question asked, not the one you wanted to hear or prepared for.

Interview Advice: Be prepared for some questions on current affairs - for example, in my 2017 interview I was asked how I thought Brexit might impact Fujitsu's business, as they'd just transitioned to a Europe-wide organisation rather than individual country organisations. Remember that 'winning' any group task is not the goal - what they're looking at is how you interact with other people. Shouting over anyone won't make a good impression. Apprentice Developer, Engineering at Reed Global

Application Advice: Be honest about your previous experience. When it comes to software development, soft skills are very important, so do not be afraid to highlight this aspects of your past work history. We all start somewhere, and personally my coding experience was not very vast before starting the apprenticeship. Make sure to show that you are passionate about programming and give good reasons as to why you feel your past experiences may benefit the company. Also make sure to mention what kind of things interest you in the tech industry. It's important to show you have interest in the role your applying for!

Interview Advice: The interview was much less formal than interviews I have had in previous roles. (I used to work in Social Work). The interviews were quite relaxed and this helped me feel more comfortable answering questions. My advice would be, to make sure you talk about why you're interested in programming, highlight areas you are interested in. Make sure to mention any experience of soft skills you have, and also accept that you may not all the lingo associated with programming. Also, ask a lot of questions, it's always good to get a good understanding of the company you're applying to and what its ethos is.

Level 4 Associate Project Manager, Cloud Enablement at Willis Towers Watson

Application Advice: I spent a long time out of work and know how hard and disheartening it can be constantly being knocked back by employers. Sometimes you may not have all the skills or experience asked, but still apply as you never know. A demonstrated passion to learn and grow is far more valuable than simply having a qualification on a piece of paper. Never underestimate your own value!

Interview Advice: Try and remain calm in the interview. Demonstrate your passion and knowledge and come prepared. I was convinced I wasn't going to get the job but thought the interview would be a good chance for me to get more experience and feedback. I think because of this my nerves subsided and I just got on with it. This is a great company and the people here are extremely friendly and will try and make you feel comfortable. My team threw the usual process out the window and covered all the same bases as the questions but in their own way that made it more like a conversation than a formal process.
