Assistant Manager, Stores at Majestic Wine

Application Advice: Makes sure you research the company. Just be you.

Interview Advice: Make sure that you research the company and visit a store before you go for your interview so that you are fully prepared and can have a chat with the staff in the stores about the role and responsibilities to make sure that the job is right for you. The interview process is quite quick and it's really laid back and relaxed. You will have your first interview which is all about you as a person, what interests you, why Majestic? Sell a bottle of Wine to the interviewee but dont panic, it's not about you being a Wine expert, they just want to see if you have the selling skills. You also go over what you have achieved in other roles or what University has given you. If you are successful on the first interview, you will be invited to a second interview whereby they are interested in what you can bring to the company, where do you think Majestic can take you career wise and where you see yourself in 5 years. Also ask why do Majestic stores have tasting counters? And remember that at Majestic we are very customer focused so mention that and give any examples of where you have gone above and beyond for a customer before. Also ask, when have you been creative as we are a creative bunch at Majestic! Good luck!

Application Advice: If you're really into wine then show this during the interviews. Really consider this job before applying as most people will tell you what you want to hear and not the real truth about working here. It's not a bad job but it's not what I would call a proper graduate scheme. They recruit and employ around 200 people a year because the staff turn over is high.

Interview Advice: At the first interview you're asked to sell one of three products, Champagne, White Wine or a Red Wine. You're also asked to describe a time when you where in a particular situation etc. etc. At the second interview you are interviewed by a senior manager (Regional or Store Manager) they ask questions about how passionate you are towards wine, what you would do in various situations if you were working at majestic wine etc. Be passionate about wine and show this, be a people person and enthusiastic. Online tests - Numerical and others - Very difficult although I think if they like you on the phone interview and your CV is good then they will progress you to the assessment centre. Assessment centre - Assessed by 6+ managers/directors who have the roles you will be working under - Group activities (8-12 candidates for 3 roles at a time), interviews (some with two interviewers) and a presentation. Group activities - those who dominated did not get through, just be yourself and be prepared to answer questions from the 6+ managers who observe the tasks. Interviews - make sure you know you're CV and the obvious questions of why you want the role at WHSmith. Presentation - was not a powerpoint presentation - guided the audience through the presentation slides - can be towards one person or more depending on your time slot and if people are busy. Make sure you read the brief properly - a few people read it wrong or did not do any research. Assesment centre advice - don't worry if you don't shine at everything but make sure you at least do well in 2/3 of the tasks - be confident and justify your answers in all the activities.

Interview Advice: In assessment centres you need to be heard, you need to be confident, but you need to balance this without sounding rude or arrogant, and not interrupting people - this is incredibly difficult in the tense situation of the day One of my best pieces of feedback was that I'd shown humility: I added something up incorrectly in a group session, when I realised my mistake 2 minutes later, I admitted it so the whole group knew the facts. At the time I thought that was going to be a bad point on adding something up incorrectly in the first place

TJX Europe

Graduate Scheme – Allocation Analyst, Merchandising at TJX Europe

Application Advice: Definitely research the company and what makes TKMaxx different to other retailers - the Off-Price business model is new to Europe (but common in the US), so think about what this means. The way the company trades is very reactive, so you have to be able to balance planning with thinking on your feet, and be able to own your decisions and take responsibility for them, so demonstrating examples of times you have done this would be a plus. Be aware that you will be in Merchandising for at least a couple of years before you are able to move into Buying (if that's what you want to do), and you have to be comfortable with analysing your business and really understanding how to drive sales. Merchandising gives you a real grounding in the business and is excellent training to prepare you for other areas, but some people struggle with this side of it and so I would really think about whether that's for you before applying.

Interview Advice: For the assessment centre tasks, demonstrate that you can think on your feet, are confident in what you are saying and back this up with the info that you have. It doesn't have to be right - people just want to know that you have thought about it and have made the best decision you can based on what's available. Try and listen to others' opinions as well, and if they raise some interesting points then you can build that into what you are saying too. The most important thing is to be friendly and smile! All the interviewers are lovely and if you do get some tough questions, understand that they just want to get the best out of you and push you to think about things a bit more than you have. They're not trying to catch you out, just give you an opportunity to shine.
