Application Advice: Be yourself, try to grasp the culture that runs through the agency ("when in doubt be nice") and relax as much as you can! You need to make yourself interesting in the initial application, and from there it is a case of making a genuine human impression. Be polite, chatty, bright-eyed and open and you should go a long way. Recognize your achievement in getting through to the latter rounds, and harness that confidence without ever letting it tumble into arrogance! Arrogance is the big no-no here. Be a communicator and a radiator in the social and group situations, and always consider your points of view, and the manner in which their communication reflects on you - don't talk over others, undermine them or be needlessly controversial. Have a point of view, but make sure it is gently and considerately offered. And then the obvious bits - know about AMV, know about the industry, know about the future.

Application Advice: Agencies review loads of applications so think of ways to make yours stand out (keep it short, have fun, and showcase your personality).

Interview Advice: As much as you can study up on the industry be prepared to talk about yourself - the interviewer will be keen to get to know you as a person and to work out how well you will fit into the agency. That said it is still worth brushing up on your knowledge of the industry including current adverts and emerging trends. Have opinions on your favourite AND least favourite ads, as well as how you would progress with/improve them (try not to think of obvious examples; the brands you choose to discuss are a great way to showcase how you think and your interests).

Application Advice: Always triple check, spelling mistakes are a big no no. And don't try and cram everything you've ever heard about advertising into your answers. You often have limited word count, so a clear and succinct answer is best.

Interview Advice: Always have a good question to ask your interviewer at the end. For example it could be why exactly they got into advertising or what is their favourite piece of creative and why? Interview Advice: Watch lots of adverts before you come in. What makes them good, what makes them bad, do you think they work? What do you think the strategy behind the idea was? They aren't trying to trick you at the interviews by showing you really obscure adverts, they want to know if you can interpret them. Don't pretend you love an advert just because we have done it - if you don't like it tell us why and where you think it went wrong! The biggest thing the interviewers are asking themselves is if they could sit next to you on a flight for three hours. This is an interview to get to know you, and that matters much more than your knowledge of advertising theory or the history of the company (but obviously this helps as well!)

M&C Saatchi Group

Graduate, at M&C Saatchi Group

Application Advice: Remember that whilst communications is a creative industry by nature and necessity, it is fundamentally about solving business problems and making money. Clients invest in marketing to improve their sales, market share, brand profile, etc. etc. So they pay us to fix these problems using creative solutions - campaigns aren't creative for creativity's sake. It's all about effectiveness. This is really important to remember when applying for jobs in advertising because otherwise you may look a bit naive, or be disappointed when you arrive and realise it's all about money!

Interview Advice: M&C Saatchi employs the brutally simple philosophy through everything it does but it is also very academic. It's important to get a balance of cerebral rigour and simple insights to achieve impact. The interview will be in three parts, one focusing on you and your attitude/approach, one on your understanding of and interest in the industry, and the third with another candidate where you will be asked to debate work and do a short role play pretending one of you is a client. Then there is an assessment day which usually includes a solo presentation, group exercises, a group task and presentation and then a dinner.

Application Advice: They always say at their open days that they're looking for people who are bright and nice. You need to demonstrate through everything your answers that you're both. Be yourself on your application form, but don't feel you need to be ridiculously quirky (unless, of course, you are!). There's a difference between coming across as 'memorable' and as somewhat risky. And most importantly, make sure you come across on paper like you do in person. There's no point using words you wouldn't normally, or using a tone or voice which is very different from your own. You're likely to stick out at interview stage if so, and people will get confused as to who you really are!

Interview Advice: Be honest with your answers - don't feel you need to give the answers you necessarily want to hear. So, for example, don't feel like you need to pretend you're really knowledgeable about how the industry works, etc - unless, of course, you actually are. I think they're just looking for people that demonstrate a passion to learn about (and work in) it. Have four or five adverts up-your-sleeve which you feel confident talking/expressing an opinion about (it's better if they aren't made by AMV, I reckon). A couple of your favourite ads (and why) - try not to make it too obvious unless you have something really interesting to say about it - and then one or two that you think are really bad/problematic (and why). And definitely one or two examples of 'integrated' campaigns that pan across different types of media. Try as much as you can to just enjoy the interviews. They're looking for normal people with lives outside of advertising, so don't feel afraid to talk about what else makes you tick. That could be the thing that makes you stick in their minds.

Application Advice: Be yourself - they're looking for people who are personable. The AMV grad scheme motto is 'hire for enthusiasm, train for skill' and I think this is very true. At the same time, make sure you have a genuine interest in advertising and show this in your application as best you can. It will quickly become very obvious in the interview rounds if you do not have an interest in the industry. You should also really understand the roles available to you. It's not just Account Management, although it may seem that way. AMV also takes on graduate planners and graduate project managers if you express and interest in these departments and seem fit for the role.

Interview Advice: Know the agency - both in terms of its work and in terms of its 'ethos'. If you have both of these things down you're likely to have quite a bit of relevant stuff to talk about! Don't be nervous, the interviewers aren't trying to trick you - some of the questions may be a bit left-field though, so prepare for these! Ask questions too!

Account Manager, at M&C Saatchi Group

Application Advice: There are always a lot of applications so you need to stand out, just because it's advertising though it doesn't mean you should come across as the class clown. Ultimately we are a business and need candidates that will further the business. In applications try to avoid clichés and using examples that will have been used a hundred times before so when asked about an interesting piece of advertising or communication try to use something unique and different.

Interview Advice: Most important of all is to prepare. Understand the company history, key partners, financial report and historic adverts that have been created. You will likely be asked for your opinion on certain adverts in a group situation. It is important to show that you are able to work in a group environment whilst also able to put forward your own opinions.

AMV BBDO

Account Executive, London at AMV BBDO

Application Advice: Do the work, so that you can relax, be yourself and be confident. Do as much work experience as possible, in the best places possible, find out your strengths and weaknesses in the role you are applying for. Do the research on the company, know their work, have an opinion. Once you have all the knowledge you need about yourself and about the company, be honest in your application and your interview, if you are being honest there is no need to be nervous, you can be yourself.

Interview Advice: Be respectful, but be interested. Ask questions. Open up, let them meet the real you so that you can form a good relationship.

Account Executive, Account Management at AMV BBDO

Application Advice: Take an interest in the industry as a whole and not just work AMV has done. Look into case studies, awards and great work. Also, know what kind of person you are. If you work best in a high pressure/stress environment as some people do then AMV isn't the place for you. Whilst we do have difficult days the atmosphere here is much more focused on getting the best out of people through encouragement rather than pressure.

Apprentice Account Executive, Biddable Media at Mindshare

Application Advice: Mindshare is a very rewarding place that offers apprenticeships in 3 different sectors of the business. Before you apply, ensure you understand each sector and decide what is best for you.

Interview Advice: They do not expect you to know everything! Remain calm and try to learn the basics of the industry. If you want to learn more then ask. They're not after someone who already knows how to do this job. They're after someone who is keen to learn how to do this job well.
