Computacenter

Service Management Associate, UK Services Management at Computacenter

Application Advice: When applying for one of the Graduate schemes it is important to demonstrate your commitment and drive to do well in your career. CC is a people driven company and highly invest in their employees. Be yourself!

Interview Advice: CC want to ensure that they are the right fit for you just as much as you are the right fit for the company. When applying for one of the Grad Scheme I would highly recommend being yourself. Looking back now there was no need to be so nervous. Being able to recognise your transferable skills from any studies/job you have had previously is a good thing to do. CC are not looking for an IT background so don't let that stop you! Be the best you can and smile!

Associate Service Manager, Service Management at Computacenter

Application Advice: Understand the role you are applying for, know why you want to work in IT and as an associate. Think about why you want to work for the company, you need to fit into the CC culture so it is important to think how and why you would like to fit into the culture. Practice the tests and make sure your video is on a plain background.

Interview Advice: Remember the STAR method. Do not worry too much about knowing everything about computers. Look at CC values and how you will fit with these. Be yourself, this is key you will not be able to keep up a persona for the assessment day so do not play a character. Have one or two insightful questions to ask everyone you meet. Be a team player this is not the apprentice. Practice your presentation, it will leave an impression so practice makes perfect. And reach out to people to help and give you advice.

Be clear in WHY you want to apply for that specific programme- if it is technology show passion and genuine interest in this rather than a generic response about applying for various grad programmes.

Interview Advice: Be yourself and be honest - if you're giving examples that are untrue it is easy to trip yourself up, whereas telling the truth means you can always get back on track to what you are trying to say. Competency based question - STAR technique and being clear and concise in these is important. Group work and presentation skills also important. Do not try and take over to show you are the leader, these are about your negotiation skills and ability to see others point of views and come to the best solution for the situation; Interview -> one on one, normal interview questions and then two stream specific at the end; Presentation -> one on one, you get given the subject 30-60 minutes before your presentation so you have this time to prepare. Tech grads get a different subject to everyone else. Just use the information given to you and make sure you present as clearly as possible, again it is more important to present YOURSELF well, than the topic.

Also take time to consider what you are applying for as the graduate scheme can be quite strict on the roles you can, and can not do.

Virgin Media

Engineering Graduate, Telco and Access Engineering at Virgin Media

Application Advice: When applying ensure you do significant background research on the role and what Virgin Media offer. Once past the initial application stage it is so important to show off your personality as well as your technical ability. Throughout the latter stages of the application stages I would argue that the personality of the applicant becomes more and more important. Don't worry if you don't have any particular experience in Telecoms or engineering, if you have a STEM background, the assessors will be confident that you will be able to pick up the skills required over the course of the grad scheme.

Interview Advice: The interviews I went through in the application process for Virgin Media, particularly in the assessment centre stage, were far more relaxed than some other companies I applied to. My advice would be to try and mirror the relaxed atmosphere, be open and friendly to those around you especially in the group activities as it will demonstrate that you are a person who would be great to work with in a business environment. Also, do your research! Background knowledge of the company is vital for any interview at any company.

Application Advice: Ensure that you try and understand fully what you are applying for. This is not a pathway into becoming a lawyer, and although legal degrees are suitable, they are not required. Do not be phased by the "legal" nature of the work - common sense, logic, and understanding of principles will prevail. My French and English degree has not been a hindrance at all.

Interview Advice: There are 3 components to the screening process: The Interview. Interviews are highly competency based. They draw upon your experiences. They don't all need to be related to the job, so don't start making up corporate scenario or pseudo-legal situations, but be honest. The presentation. Don't be phased by the short timescales, or worry too much about how "pretty" your slides are. Focus on information output and completing your pitch within the time. The group exercise. You are being monitored here as an individual, as well as part of the group. Your only aim is to complete the task, not to be the loudest in the team.

The graduate programme gives an excellent opportunity to experience a number of different roles within the company and get a broad experience across a number of departments. Do not become too focused on a specific role but look to gain as broad a knowledge as possible before narrowing in on your preferred area later on.

Interview Advice: For the interview process the most important thing to remember is to be honest and open. People are the most important thing to Virgin Media and therefore it follows that the focus on interviews is how your personality comes through and not necessarily academic achievements. Be friendly and demonstrate that you are capable of working in a team environment and as an individual. The open days are set in a relaxed environment so try to just enjoy the day!

Scrum Master/Delivery Manager, IT Delivery at Capital One

Application Advice: Although the application process seems daunting and intense its not actually as bad as it seems. The aim of the assessment day is to make you feel as comfortable as possible - you're not going to be yourself if you feel like you're going to throw up every 5 minutes out of stress! The whole aim of these days is to make sure you're the right fit for the job. You're CV has got you to that point on qualifications. The rest is about who you are as a person, what your interests are and what your goals are.

Interview Advice: The interview is more of a job fit role, they'll ask you the standard "Why Capital One" "Why IT" "What interests do you have" but in general they want to know what you didn't put on your CV, and interesting facts about yourself like you've voluteered abroad, have a huge passion for animals - things that make you stand out from the crowd of people that just reel of there CV again. The best advice i can give is; be yourself. Don't worry about if your qualifications are good enough - you got to the interview they clearly are!

Cliched advice, and I know it used to drive me insane seeing it, but 'just be yourself' is the best advice you can get for the assessment centre. IT Graduate, IT at easyJet

Application Advice: I would advise a candidate to be true to who they are as a person - interview easyJet as much as they interview you and make sure this is a place you really do want to work as if you love working here as I do, you will really do well on the scheme. One of the most important things is making sure you are on board with the easyJet culture... we work hard but we also play hard. We put in the hours where needed but make sure we get that vital work life balance. I would advise them to research the airline and the airline industry and our competitors as it really shows on the day who has done their research! Mostly, though I would advise them to have fun at the assessment day, relax and let their personality shine through instead of their nerves.

Interview Advice: Interview questions consist mainly of competency based questions... tell me a time when you led a team, solved a problem etc. I would create a list of 20-30 possible competency based questions and come up with an answer for each of them. You can draw on part time work, voluntary activities, sports teams, travel experience and university work to generate your examples. Also the standard questions are asked...Why do you want to work here etc.

Telefonica

Graduate, Operations at Telefonica

Application Advice: The application process involves an online application, online competency tests, a recorded video interview, and an assessment centre. Make sure you have prior experience in teamwork, leadership, analysis. Experience in a role related to telecoms is useful but not essential. A degree in a rigorous, analytical subject is desired, but it doesn't have to be a BSc. You're not expected to have lots of technical knowledge unless you're applying to the Networks part of the grad scheme (for which a higher level of technical experience/skills is desired). Service Management expects you to learn quickly and adapt, not necessarily arrive with considerable tech knowledge.

Interview Advice: The video interview is recorded and one-way. You will not converse with a person, you will answer questions shown on screen and you will have a limited time to prepare answers and record them. Make sure your webcam and backdrop is appropriate and try to stay calm, maintain eye contact with the camera, and avoid speaking too quickly. The Assessment Centre involves one-on-one interviews, group tasks, and general monitoring throughout the day. You will have a one-on-one interview, a personal business analysis exercise and interview, and monitored group tasks to complete. Make sure you know your CV back to front and remember examples of times where you have solved problems, shown leadership, had to analyse a problem etc. There's nothing unorthodox or anything designed to trip you up, they're genuinely interested in finding out whether you're right for Telefonica.

Tesco

Business Analyst, Marketing IT at Tesco

Application Advice: Tesco are one of few companies which actively recruit from any degree background - there are people on the IT Grad Scheme from History, Maths, Law and even Neuroscience backgrounds!

Interview Advice: The assessment centres are less formal than other companies because Tesco aims to recruit people with a genuine interest and talent for customer service. So be yourself and don't try to out compete other candidates. Get your point across but collaborate well in a group as this is seen as vital.

John Lewis Partnership

, at John Lewis Partnership

Application Advice: Research the values, principles and behaviours which are important to the John Lewis Partnership as I believe this is what they look for above all else. Try to show through application answers the ways in which your previous experience has demonstrated and matches these. One thing that is especially important in IT is to show how you respond and adapt to change as it's a very fast-paced and changeable environment.

Interview Advice: Be yourself. Partners are genuinely looking to see your true personality so don't put on a persona to try and impress! During any group tasks in interview your attitude towards working as part of a group will be very important so try to include all applicants in group tasks and don't come across as too domineering. For the Technology graduate scheme in particular I would advise applicants to research the ways in which the John Lewis Partnership has applied technology in the business so far and also to look at their approach towards an omni-channel strategy.
