Merlin Entertainments

Graduate Marketing Executive, Marketing at Merlin Entertainments

Application Advice: Think about the things you are passionate about and the unique skills you have developed and how they might translate to some of the company values Merlin holds in high regard. For me, I have worked in hospitality for 10 years prior to being successful for this role, so I evidenced how my experience has given me great foundations to understand what customers want, which is obviously a huge part of the Merlin brand.

Interview Advice: Think about all the different skills you have and how might you apply these to different questions you may be asked. I was asked to explain why I wanted to work in Marketing, why Marketing at Merlin (so learn as much as you can about the company!) and what skills I thought I had developed through working in Hospitality that might help me become an excellent marketeer.

Operations Graduate, at Merlin Entertainments

Application Advice: Look at the competencies and the values of Merlin and how you exhibit these values. You will have online tests to complete so practice these (e.g. maths and verbal reasoning) before sitting the real thing. Video interview - make sure you give plenty of examples and explain yourself fully

Interview Advice: You have a large group task before a 1-2-1 interview. Get as stuck into the tasks as you possibly can as it will give you an idea if the job is for you and whether you are inspired by the work that you have to do. You don't need to be the loudest person in the room (I'm certainly not) but you do need to contribute and show why you are the right person for the job. Make sure that you get your point across but also listen and include people to join in. The 1-2-1 is usually with quite a senior member of management within Merlin but just don't let that intimidate you. Make sure you have lots of examples to back up why you are the best candidate. Most of all relax, and enjoy as it's a good fun day. Take advantage of the alumni graduates who come and visit at lunchtime and ask them plenty of questions.

For example, if someone needs to work on a finance section but you want a marketing job, then show your diverse skill set by doing a bit of finance and contributing creative ideas like a marketeer. Think of any question you might be asked about your project/presentation and have an answer ready. Part 1 is working in a bigger group and time is a big crunch, so be careful. Interview Advice: I had two assessments: one group assessment and then an individual interview. They sent all of the interviewees some example financial statements the day before the assessment day. I would encourage applicants to read through these carefully and perform their own analysis. Note that they told us that it would take 20 minutes to walk from the train station, but it is actually morel like 30-40, so be careful to arrive on time.

Merlin holds its core values in high importance, so if you want to be successful, your application needs to reflect that you share that view.

Interview Advice: Be yourself and just make sure you know the core basics about the company if you're an external candidate or even internal. You don't need to know every location of every attraction but at least knowing most of the brands is a must. If you can highlight the value that you can contribute to the company you are more likely to be seen. KFC like people to be individuals and be their best selves. Ultimately you need to be able to run a restaurant, but it's good to have a spark of something new. Share if you are not good at something, and be open about your weaknesses as they will be able to help you.

Interview Advice: Prepare for the usual questions, such as 'Why this company?', 'Why this industry?' - you will need to have strong answers to these questions to stand out. Prepare examples to demonstrate the ways in which you have exemplified key competencies and company values. Don't worry if the interviewer keeps digging and questioning, they are just trying to find out as much as they can, don't let this put you off - be confident and speak clearly.

Application Advice: Spend time on it, don't rush anything. Answer honestly and don't try and overthink the process. Practise for the online tests, you can find loads of examples online. If this is your number 1 grad scheme (which it should be) then apply to others before so you understand the process; if you're not used to this kind of application it's good to have a feel for it before you start it.

Interview Advice: Be yourself, it's very quickly noticeable if you're not! Prepare and read up knowledge about the company because a) how can you even know you really want to work for a company if you don't know them and b) how are you going to convince the company you want to if you don't know yourself You don't need to sit knowing the exact locations of each attraction but knowing what brands are within Merlin is a good start. I was mainly asked competency based questions in my interview e.g. give us an example of when you have been creative give us an example of when you have gone above and beyond for a customer. Always try to give work based examples. You can find competency question examples all over, so think of examples for those questions and be prepared to think on your feet.

Interview Advice: Be professional but also be yourself, we are not a 'suit and tie' company, but we are extremely professional at what we do. Merlin is fast paced to keep up with our competitors (or be the competitor!!), be prepared to answer questions quickly and be put on the spot. The AC lasts over two days, and is a mix of small group assessments and a one-to-one interview. There is lots of opportunity to show your personality, but Merlin is all about fun so the AC is a lot less daunting than over FTSE companies. Compass Group UK & Ireland

Graduate, at Compass Group

Application Advice: The first piece of advice I'd give to candidates is to be open-minded. Compass offers a huge scope of different professions and is not solely just catering. Just by being part of the Graduate Programme I have already experienced the vastness of the Business and thus the opportunities available. If you'd asked me this time last year what I'd be doing, I would never have said I'd work in schools or in Kitchen Units helping to develop nutritious school meals. But now, I couldn't imagine a better first job to have. The second piece of advice I'd give is to be flexible and willing to learn. If you apply to work at Compass there will always be new information to take on as well as new experiences and new people. Learning and education does not stop at University!

Interview Advice: If you are applying for a Nutrition position at Compass, I would suggest making sure you are up to date on all the latest Government initiatives (e.g. SACN Sugar Recommendations) as well as the School Food Plan and Food for Life Accreditation marks. Being able to evidence that you have worked with different age groups/catering would be a really good start. Personal qualities are also extremely important in an interview. Showing that you are determined, good-willed, hard-working, flexible, reliable are all really important traits to have when working in a role like this. Having living examples of how you have shown each of these qualities may well stand you out from other people.

Compass Group UK & Ireland

Graduate, at Compass Group

Application Advice: My one piece of advice would be to be yourself. Currently working in recruitment, it is really easy to spot someone who is trying to be someone they are not. It's always refreshing to find someone who is confident in not only their ability, but their own personality, and how they can use this to progress. I would also recommend displaying flexibility and not narrowing your future plans to one path, as this can really open up opportunities for you.

Interview Advice: I had to complete an initial online application, then online tests, a video interview, and finally face-to-face interviews. A common question I was asked was "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?" This can be difficult to answer when you've only just graduated, so my recommendation would be to be honest. If you don't know, then tell your interviewer this! Turn it into a positive, and show how flexible and excited you are that your career may take many different directions. I would also recommend researching both the company and the specific sector you are interested in! Finally, work experience is really valuable. Whilst university qualifications are great, show how you have mixed this with work experience to help you apply what you've learned. A knowledge of how a business works is really appealing to employers, so show that you've taken the time to understand this, and have experienced it first hand.

Compass Group UK & Ireland

Graduate, ESS at Compass Group

Application Advice: I would advise future candidates to take the time to thoroughly research Compass Group before even attempting the application. I would suggest gaining knowledge of their history and development of the company as it is today, their values, what sectors they cover, their competitors and what has been happening in the news and social media. I found LinkedIn in particular extremely useful to research influential people and to understand more about the different sectors and job roles. Compass Group is such an enormous company it can take a while to grasp this knowledge and understanding.

Interview Advice: The fact that you have got through to the interview stage clearly means that you are a strong candidate, however you still need to prove that you are capable and fit with Compass Group's culture. I would advise candidates to give consideration to their image before they even step into the interview room. Creating the right impression from the start is essential. I always keep in mind that old saying, 'you never get a second chance to make a first impression'. Choose your outfit wisely and think about dressing to complement the image you are looking to portray. I believe that what you don't say in an interview is just as important as what you do say. I found focusing on the following extremely useful: Making eye contact with the interviewer; this portrays true listening skills Posture- Walk tall, stand tall and sit tall; this portrays confidence and power Keeping your facial expression animated;this portrays enthusiasm and energy Last but not least, be yourself and let your personality shine through. Authenticity is key!

Assistant Manager, at Carluccio’s

Application Advice: Do not enter into this lightly if you have not worked in hospitality, as this role requires a person to be of a certain calibre in order to perform this job successfully as well as gain immense enjoyment and satisfaction. The training is excellent but it is incredibly demanding both physically and mentally, therefore you need to be prepared to sacrifice your personal life at times in order to come into work at a minutes notice, deal with emergencies and generally demonstrate that you are a flexible and consistent individual. It will not be a worthwhile experience if you do not enjoy hard graft, the ability to make mistakes and are not able to learn from them quickly. Lastly, you need to have a genuine passion for people in all ways, from interaction with customers to getting to know your staff in order to get the best performance possible out of them.

Interview Advice: Be yourself! As long as you remain, however cheesy as it sounds, true to yourself on the day this will come across to the HR team. They are not looking for ready made managers as this can only come with the training that follows, rather they are looking for nice people who will compliment and promote the ethos of the company. There are SO MANY opportunities for learning and development, so you need to be the kind of person willing to seek out new challenges and really make a difference to the business.

Interview Advice: The graduate assessment began with a telephone interview - do your homework on Carluccios. Its got such an amazing history, you'll love reading about it. Then if successful there's an assessment day with roughly 10 other graduates. On the assessment day there are lots of roleplays and scenarios which you can't practice for, but the best bit of advise I could give would be to just be yourself.
