Accenture

Technology Consulting Analyst, ACG at Accenture

Application Advice: Be under no illusions: Accenture is a technology consulting company first and foremost. In all likelihood, if employed, you will spend most of your career working on big IT projects - even if you are formally aligned to management consulting. Similarly, be prepared to spend months (or even a year) in a role or on a project you don't like before you get the chance to specify what you want to do with your career. In terms of preparation, be careful to "do your homework". Make sure you are clear what you are applying for, why you are right for the position and why you want it. What is it about consulting, and about Accenture in particular, that appeals to you? Do some research into project plans and how to make one, as you will be asked to do so.

Interview Advice: Interviewers are more interested in how you think about problems and how you communicate your ideas (under pressure!) than they are in how quickly you answer, or whether you get the answer "right". In practice, this means you shouldn't be afraid to pause for a moment to think before answering, and you absolutely should talk your interviewer through your thought process as you go. If you can find someone to prep you by asking tough questions, that will help too.

Accenture

Management Consulting Analyst, Health & Public Service at Accenture

Application Advice: Understand that the majority of Accenture's revenues comes from IT delivery. This is what we do best. While we do have a Strategy practice, this is small in comparison to other companies. I would therefore advise that only applicants who have a real interest in technology should apply because even if you do end up doing Strategy or MC work, it's likely that IT will play a part somehow.

Interview Advice: The interview involved a case-study, group activity and a one-on-one interview. I would advise to research Accenture's delivery methods and software offerings, understand the project lifecycle and wider trends in IT delivery such as agile. How might these shape our strategy in the future?

Technology Consulting Analyst, Financial Services at Accenture

Application Advice: 1) Do your research. You have probably heard it a hundred times, but it is true. The trick is to make sure you relate the values of the company to you. It shows that you have not just done your homework and looked at their website, but that you thought about it and REALLY are the best fit for the company. Check out LinkedIn, etc. 2) Go to events, presentations, etc. and write down the names of the people you talked to so that you can mention them on your cover letter or during your interview.

Interview Advice: I am not saying it is easy, I am saying that preparing it definitely pays off and makes the process way more enjoyable! I had fun during my assessment day and felt confident in my answers during the interview because I had thought of it before hand. For example, make a list of common questions and underneath bullet point the main things that you would like to include in your answers (examples, but also key words from the company culture, projects, clients, etc.).

Capgemini UK plc

Associate Consultant, Consumer Experience at Capgemini UK plc

Application Advice: In addition to the usual sources of information about working at Capgemini (website, careers fair etc), I would highly recommend reading some of the blogs on the website before applying. The CDC blog in particular is fantastic for learning exactly what you will do as a consultant, the lessons learnt from others on the grad scheme and other hints/tips. It is written by CDCers (grad scheme). The capability teams also have blogs, so it's a great source to get an insight into the type of work the team does and the thought leadership on some of the main topics affecting that team. Example blogs: -CDC blog: https://www.uk.capgemini-consulting.com/blog/cdc-blogs -Consumer Experience blog: https://www.capgemini-consulting.com/blog/customer-experience

Interview Advice: There is a strong emphasis on teamwork so make sure at the team exercise you assert your opinions without overpowering the rest of the group and take on board other people's opinions. You will be given a case study to prepare for beforehand and I recommend you take the time to prepare this well. Make sure you can get the main points across in the time allocated for this exercise. In addition to the case study you will be asked the standard competency questions which you can prepare for.

QA Consulting

Consultant, at QA Consulting

Application Advice: Those coming from a computing background should be expected to show a strong understanding of Object Orientated Programming principles. Any final year projects from University or any major project you've worked on will also aid you greatly as long as it demonstrates your capability as a programmer. Those not coming from a computing background (maths, science etc..) should still study up a little on OOP principles but there's no major setback if you aren't able to demonstrate your programming knowledge well. Regardless of background, if you are invited to an assessment day, you will be expected to demonstrate your ability to teamwork with others under pressure as well as presenting your outcomes towards an audience.

Interview Advice: If you have mentioned your final year project or any major work you've done, you will be asked to talk about it in detail. You will be asked about specifics in OOP, so demonstrate your knowledge in understanding the concepts such as abstraction and encapsulation.

Application Advice: Online Application: Take your time and be as honest as possible. If you are turned down at this stage it's because you either don't fit the personality profile of the company or because you don't meet the requirements. Phone Interview: Was very straightforward, took around 30 minutes and had an answer saying I'd passed 2 hours later. Make sure you know about the Systems Development Lifecycle and can talk about things you have done in a given context (situation where you showed leadership, etc..) Assessment Day: Split into four parts: Written test, Face-to-Face Interview, Role Play, Group Scenario. Written test is straightforward. Verbal reasoning for Technology stream, Verbal and Numerical reasoning for Manangement Consulting stream. Face-to-Face interview: Similar advice to the telephone interview. Be yourself and make sure you have examples to show off your personality and roundedness Role Play (one-on-one): Varies from year to year, you are given the topic in advance for the tech stream and on the day for the management consulting stream. If on tech stream, make sure you prepare thoroughly and bring a 'wow factor'. Group role play: Don't dominate the conversation, it's tempting to steal the spotlight but they want to see you working together and being 'collaborative'.

Interview Advice: Be honest, show integrity and collaborative spirit, be passionate about the area of technology that interests you, have an understanding of some of their key projects within the Business Unit you are applying for. Application Advice: Don't apply if you're not willing to travel. IBM UK has adopted a more European model so there's a fair chance you can find yourself working somewhere in Europe, almost certainly outside of London. Furthermore if you know you have a specific interest in a certain thing make this known. if you're passionate about analytics, let people know, if you're big on social media, let people know. IBM has diversified its solutions recently so there is less 'Traditional consulting' and more millennial- friendly work. But if you don't tell people that's where your passions or interests lie you won't get place in a service line that suits.

Interview Advice: Be yourself. I firmly believe IBM hire people for their personality. There are a number of factors that you are assessed on in the interview process but I'd say a collaborative, balanced and measured person who is willing to listen to others to build a better idea or solution is going to get the job 9 times out of 10 over the brass, loud, dominant applicant.

There's no use coming to Vodafone with the attitude that it's 'just a job' because that's not what Vodafone's employees are about. You've got to have a genuine passion and ambition for what Vodafone do and what you want to explore and learn within Vodafone.

Interview Advice: Be yourself. Relax and don't see the interviewer as someone interviewing you to try and find your faults or gaps in your knowledge. Treat the interview much like a chat with a friend or a colleague on topics you a) know about and are interested in and b) can confidently talk about without seeming nervous or as if you are reeling off information you've learnt purely for the interview. If you can do this and know about yourself, Vodafone and the things that interest you in Vodafone you will be more than fine in the interview.

Accenture

Application Advice: Be sure that you want to work in technology - the vast majority of Accenture's projects are in that area, whether the specific role is techy or not. There has been a drive in recent years to expand the strategy practise, but I believe this is to a large extent a way of leveraging Accenture's technology expertise. In the actual application, I found the key was to know what you're applying for. Some applicants think of Accenture as just another name on a long list of management consultancies, but make sure that you know about the character of the company. Read up online, talk to whoever you can at careers events, or even contact HR to see if there's someone you can talk to.

Accenture

Digital Analyst, Analyst Consulting Group at Accenture

Application Advice: Research the industry. All throughout the process you will be asked about the company, its clients, the work it does, the directions it is moving in and why. Research all the publically available Accenture documents you can (for example the 'Technology Vision' for that year). Also try and relate experiences in your life to Key Competencies, be they part-time work, internships or university clubs/socieities. All top companies look for candidates to not only demonstrate how they have certain key competencies (google them, they're quite generic across all grad jobs), but also how well you can articluate those experiences and personal qualities.

Interview Advice: If you have researched the company and prepared your competencies, you're half way there. Further to this, they key to interviews/assessment centres is how you conduct yourself. Accenture are looking for a type of person, who fits with the company ethos, and who can work as part of a team of people, as ultimately, thats what consultancy is all about: teamwork. Make sure you get your points across in interviews/group tasks, but don't be too pushy. You need to be able to listen as well as talk, considering all the facts and opinions available and then come to a reasoned conclusion. If you get the balance between being respectful but assertive right, you'll be fine.

CGI

Test Analyst, Defence at CGI

Application Advice: Check your spelling! Sounds silly but is all too frequent to come across misspelling in CVs etc. Also be sure not to stretch the truth too far as you may get asked about something you've written in the interview and could become a cropper. During an assessment centre be sure to chat with other candidates and staff present in the room whilst waiting around etc. This shows you are approachable and easy to talk to/communicate with. Remember you will be working with some of the candidates during the group exercise so speaking with them beforehand will make this part of the process much easier. In group exercises be careful not to talk over anyone or be negative. If you do not agree with someone's suggestion, try phrasing it differently than flat out saying no. Be inclusive; if you notice a member of the group is being left out or quiet, try and involve them by asking their opinion etc.

Interview Advice: Read through the hints and tips page and prepare examples for the core competencies listed. Where possible try and prepare several examples for each competency with some variance. Also make sure to prepare several questions yourself. This shows you have an interest in learning more than what's available on the web to read and can provide another conversational point. Speak clearly and concisely, take a breath if you can tell you are going to stumble on something you're about to say.

Interview Advice: I found the Assessment Centre on the day to be very relaxed as everyone I met on the day were very friendly - it consists of an interview and a group work assessment task. During the interview, I discussed my CV / application / written assignment. Ensure you can talk in detail anything you have put on your application and CV so that you can go into it in detail whilst showing how these skills would fit into CGI. Also make sure you do your research on CGI - what projects are they currently focused on / what impresses you about the company / why do you want to work at CGI? The group work was gauging how you work with other people in a team - you are set a task and given a time limit to come on a decision to complete the task, for example you are stuck on an island, what should be done to escape it?

Alfa

Junior Consultant, at Alfa

Application Advice: Do your research into what the company does! We're not a standard consultancy firm, first and foremost we are software providers.

Interview Advice: The phone interview is very informal, a quick chat about what you are currently doing and a check that you know what the company does and what you are applying for. The first interview is just to check in more detail you know roughly what the role entails (generally technical and software development, not so much business consultancy) and what the company does in a little more detail. Typically you might get asked what a stages a standard CHP project could entail, what could prove difficult and so on. Just do the research and be friendly. The final interview is usually with more senior personnel from the company. They will probably drill down into your knowledge of, for example, the types of asset finance in the world. You can't know all the answers, but it is much more about the impression you give under a little pressure than the actual knowledge..."I don't know" is fine (in moderation)!

Accenture

Business and Systems Integration Analyst, at Accenture

Application Advice: Get your mum to read it. If she bursts out laughing, don't include that bit. Or re-word it. I think we went through 7 drafts of my application in the end. Every change was only minor and we only spent an hour or two on it, but it was definitely important to keep reviewing it. Otherwise I have no idea. I applied on a spur-of-the-moment "I really need a job right now", so I can't really remember how it went.

Interview Advice: It sounds overstated, but relax and be yourself. We were told in our first day that we were picked because we were liked, and that comes from showing who you are. In my interview I mentioned that I liked empire-building computer games and linked that to why I decided to apply for the job. The fact that I play those games probably didn't help me in the slightest, but the fact that I was willing to show I have interests outside of work probably helped a lot. Don't necessarily try to take charge in the team projects in your application. Our team did fantastically well because we worked together to let everyone have their moment to speak and share ideas, allocating each of us 5 minutes to present each before having 5-10 minutes to discuss the answer to our problem after that. In contrast, the other team in my application group spent most of their time shouting over each other trying to be heard. Showing you can work well with everyone else but still being unafraid to make your points known is very important.
