Application Advice: Be yourself - focus on getting across the type of person you are as opposed to scripting answers on the company's performance etc. Understand the culture of the company - there's lots of information on the website detailing with what a TJX employee looks like.

Interview Advice: Mainly generic interview questions - biggest weakness, a time when you've lead, a time when you've been pushed out of your comfort zone etc. etc. Be prepared for group tasks - be vocal and involved but not overly assertive. They are looking for people who can talk and communicate with others, not who can shout the loudest.

TJX Europe

Senior Analyst, Accessories at TJX Europe

Application Advice: My advice for someone interested in applying for a position in TK Maxx is to research and read up on the company. I would particularly focus upon it's unique business model and be aware of how it compares to other conventional full price retail business models.

Interview Advice: The interviews at TK Maxx are primarily concerned with finding out who you are as person and how well you are able to work as part of a bigger team. One of the major things to consider when applying for TK Maxx and/or when attending an assessment centre, is to ask yourself how comfortable you feel working with uncertainty (working in the grey) on a daily basis. Whether it be with daily tasks or long term goals, as due to the fast paced nature of the business it's difficult to know all the information, outcomes, possibilities, eventualities etc. all the time, with the role requiring fast paced decision making and thinking.

Application Advice: Make sure you understand what the job role is before applying. Many people think merchandising is a pathway into buying and it's not.

Interview Advice: Know your strengths and weaknesses (turn your weaknesses into strengths). Be aware of competitors in the marketplace and don't be afraid to give your own ideas in your interview as it shows your creativity. I was asked 3 words to describe myself so choose wisely. I would also recommend having a really clear understanding of merchandising and its impact on the company and sales etc.

Be enthusiastic about the role and the industry and the brand if you are interviewing for a specific brand. Only apply to the role if you really feel you are passionate about it - it is a hard working industry with lower pay than others so you need to really feel strongly about wanting to start a career in retail.

Tesco

Trainee Merchandiser, Clothing at Tesco

Application Advice: If you don't hear back at any stage as to whether or not you have been successful then chase them for a response! I did not hear for weeks after my telephone interview and presumed I had not been successful. It was only on a whim that I emailed and queried only to find out that I had been successful and it was an oversight that I hadn't been notified.

Interview Advice: Relax into the assessment day. It is a long day and if you are not being yourself it will become apparent. For merchandiser positions I had to do a numeric test based on trade data, a presentation about risks and opportunities which I was able to prepare in advance of the day, and had several group tasks. My advice for the group tasks would be that it is not always about getting your idea to win or be chosen. You need to demonstrate that what you are doing is in the best interests of the customer and that you can listen to and build on the ideas of your peers.

Allocation Analyst, Womens Wear at TJX Europe’

Application Advice: To put relationships before task (where appropriate). To be honest and genuinely nice. To be interested in what people say and don't be afraid to challenge, just ensure it's done in a constructive way.

Interview Advice: Look at the website, there's a lot of relevant information. Also look on sites like TheJobCrowd, it will provide an idea of to what expect. Definitely learn about the off-price model. Other useful things to know are; ways you challenged the status quo, any projects you have headed up, being able to talk about a product (seasonality, commerciality, what does the brand mean? who does it appeal too etc). Be prepared to talk about yourself, it's fine to talk about something that didn't work out as you had expected. However, make sure you know what you would've done differently.
