Graduate – Associate, Real Estate Tax team at Grant Thornton UK LLP

Application Advice: Make sure you are fully aware of the day-to-day jobs, and of how tough it is to work and study at the same time. The study especially comes as a shock to most people.

Interview Advice: It is a very people focussed company, and so while it is obviously important to know why you want to be an accountant, the dividing factor will be someone who fits in with the company values.

Application Advice: Prepare fully for your interview - understand what traits Grant Thornton value and write out examples of experiences where you demonstrate those traits. Actually practice saying the answer as it will be much more fluent if it is well practiced and you are aware of what you are trying to say before hand. Basically just prepare.

Interview Advice: No specific questions that I remember, there was a case study where you have to analyse a situation. They don't expect any actual accounting knowledge - just try and think what would be the best thing to do and pay attention to the details - there may be mistakes in the material you are given.

Semi Senior, Private Client Tax at Smith & Williamson

Application Advice: I genuinely love my role in tax, it's so varied and interesting and if you love numbers, solving problems and helping people this is definitely the role for you, and what needs to shine through on your application. I had no direct relevant business experience when I applied, I had not done a secondment or a summer placement in the industry. But I didn't let that put me off applying and it shouldn't put you off either. Instead think about how your own personal experiences, hobbies and work experience might be applicable to the role i.e. think about what ransferrable skills you possess i.e. times where you have worked in a team, successful overcome a problem, provided excellent customer service etc. Also if you're worried about the numerical and problem solving tests there are lots of helpful practise papers online, to help you build your confidence.

Interview Advice: Before the interviews make sure you read up on current tax issues, I found the World Service Business Podcasts on the BBC really helpful, for boosting my Business acumen and awareness. Also research the firm and its values. Be yourself at the interview, if your enthusiastic about the role and opportunities on offer then this will shine through.

Smith & Williamson

Tax Trainee, Private Client Tax Services at Smith & Williamson

Application Advice: When answering the long questions, don't include everything, as in my interview I was asked similar questions but told to give different examples.

Interview Advice: At the assessment centre, we had to do the online numerical and logic tests again, those who passed these made it through to the afternoon. We then had a written test (it helps to know about the services S&W provide for this) and a group presentation (no preparation was needed for this). At my final interview I was asked a lot of questions similar to that of the online application. The interview was very conversational so try to be relaxed, have a glass of water you can sip when thinking of how to answer. It is also useful to have an issue you can talk about for commercial awareness and have answers prepared about the impact this will have on S&W for e.g the business areas that may benefit/suffer and why.

Application Advice: Make sure you have clear in your mind your reasons for why you want to work in tax. Throw in any experiences at university, school or employment that you think help you demonstrate the core "competencies" (every company or firm has them).

Interview Advice: Make sure you're completely comfortable with what you put down in the application form. I think I made a table of competencies and put in experiences etc. that I hadn't already mentioned in my application form so that if necessary I had more than just my application form to talk about. Another thing: don't speak out of turn (you might be really excited/nervous at the interview, but tone it down) because it's really rude and puts interviewers on edge, so I hear.

However it may not be the best place to start if you are looking to move on to different departments in the finance world for the reason that the impressive element of your CV will be that you are tax knowledgable, (which if you don't want to stay in tax may be more of a hinderance than an addition).
