Associated British Foods (Grocery)

Customer Executive, Customer Development Scheme at Associated British Foods (Grocery)

Application Advice: Try and get your personality across as much as possible in the application - It is difficult when you're having to write answers to what feel like very generic questions, but it will stand for so much with ABF. Don't always feel like you need to give an example where your result has been astoundingly amazing, if you can tell a story and explain in your answer how you learned from an experience and have developed, this will resonate so much more.

Interview Advice: There were multiple elements to the Interview/Assessment Centre process, but don't let this get too intimidating. At the end of the day, to even make it to the assessment centre they know that you're competent enough to join the scheme, so really use this as an opportunity to show how you fit with the culture of ABF. Spend time on the Grocery Graduate Scheme website getting familiar with it.

Capita

Graduate Trainee, at Capita

Application Advice: I would advise you to be yourself- don’t worry too much about being the loudest person in the room (that isn’t who they hire).

Interview Advice: Give a diverse range of examples and remember to be interesting. They are not looking to quiz you on the company but a general awareness is a good idea.

Capita

Commercial Graduate, Group Sales at Capita

Application Advice: Focus upon tangible experience no matter in what context, with focus on leadership e.g. captaining teams/societies at uni etc. Interactive assessment day process - important to be natural as the focus seemed to be on getting the right people rather than the qualifications etc. It is good to get an idea of the company - as it is fairly complicated, as this is typically asked about.

Interview Advice: Knowledge of Capita. Experience of leadership / being part of a team. Getting your personality across is important.

Capita

Sales Graduate, at Capita

Application Advice: First of all, only apply for this if you are a) willing to relocate, b) willing to take on a lot of study work outside of your day job. Secondly, be prepared for the online tests- there isn't any revision you can do for them, but make sure you are in a quiet room with no interruptions and that you are focused on the task at hand.

Interview Advice: I was asked about experience I have had leading others- this does not have to be in a professional setting. The best advice I can give for the assessment day is to enjoy yourself. It sounds cliché, but as they day involves several different activities and is quite full-on, it is best to settle into it and get to know your fellow interviewees. I found that everyone running the assessment was very friendly and it seemed like they really wanted us to be successful, which helped me to relax and be more confident. The main difference between the Capita assessment and the ones I have had with other companies is how welcoming everyone. Since I was successful with Capita, I believe that really helped!

AXA

Reporting Executive, Strategy/Marketing at AXA

Application Advice: Get to know the big themes in the British insurance market before you apply and bring your knowledge into your cover letter and essay questions. Use websites like the ABI and Insurance Times to understand emerging trends and risks. Many candidates just look at the AXA website to get to know everything they can about the company. But our greatest strength is our knowledge of our competitors, not just of how we are at this moment in time.

Interview Advice: Questions do tend to change from year to year, but what is constant is the fact that the questions are behavioural style rather than asking you to list your accomplishments. Expect to be asked for examples of when you didn't work to expectations and then improved yourself, or of when you had a difficult position to argue and you managed to get your point across. Keep the STAR method of answering in mind. Don't forget that the questions you are asked about your personality will be tested once the assessment centre comes around. It is one thing to say you are analytical, but you need to show those skills in your presentation, for example.

Computacenter

Sales Specialist, Sales at Computacenter

Application Advice: Do not worry if you are not technical! Everything you need to learn to be successful in role, you will either be taught directly or will be given the opportunity to go out and learn for yourself. Your personality and attitude to work will be the most important and determining factors in your success at CC as a company. Do not try and be someone that you are not, because you think it is what the recruiters want to hear. You will be found out at some point before the end of the 18 month programme and probably won't have enjoyed yourself or made the most out of working for this fantastic company.

Interview Advice: Once the introductory chit chat is out of the way, the meat of the interview will probably be competency based questions i.e. lots of questions where you are asked to give an example of yourself displaying a particular behaviour or skill. Try and think of times when you have materially contributed in the work place, university or even socially. Remembering that they are trying to gauge you as a person. Don't be tempted to say "we did this" or "we did that". The interviewer is interviewing you, not everyone else in your old team or university seminar group, focus on your own contributions.

Application Advice: The application process varies between divisions, some do not require any testing. The firm makes a point of acting quickly and trying to make offers as soon as possible, my entire application process took under a week. Getting to know the company inside out and doing research on the issues affecting the area you are applying for are more important than technical skills and going to recruitment fairs, meeting employees and getting their names to put in your cover letter is far more valuable than you may realise. The recruiters want to see that research has been done and effort has been put in; a generic CV and cover letter won't do.

Interview Advice: The interviewers will ask about issues affecting the industry and business but they are most interested in your personality and whether you will be a good fit for the role. Graduate Analyst, Trading at HSBC Bank Plc

Application Advice: Apply as early as possible as places will be filled as soon as enough people get through to the Assessment Centres. Therefore if you leave to later then it may well be too late. Additionally, make sure you do your research when doing the initial application - there is nothing worse than seeing an application that has clearly been copy and pasted from an application to another bank. In light of this, make sure your application is styled towards the role and bank rather than full of generic terms that could apply to any bank - you need to differentiate yourself.

Interview Advice: Keep calm and keep it simple - adding detail/ complexity where possible - otherwise you will trip yourself up. Make sure you keep abreast of what is going on in the market - do not try and simply cram the night before as that will most likely become evident in any interview if the interviewer decides to press you. It always good to know facts like where different markets are i.e. where the FTSE 100 is, as well as the company's share price etc. As ever research is critical - you really do need to make sure you do your prep. However that doesn't mean you have to know everything - you just have to show interest and some market knowledge.

Diageo

It's very hard to move to an area where you don't know anyone and you only see your team once per month. Sales targets are particularly 'punchy,' so get ready for constant conversations on your performance. You need to be all over your numbers at any given point on any given day.

Associated British Foods (Grocery)

Territory Manager, Sales Team – Wales and South West at Associated British Foods (Grocery)

Application Advice: This is a seriously good role for a massive player in FMCG, the products we work with change all the time so research new product development, competitors etc. Try to speak to someone in the role now. Show a self-driven attitude and a keenness for sales, along with an ability to influence and you will be a good candidate.

Interview Advice: Know about the business and what the brand means. Be able to talk about all/most ABF businesses, because most/all will be represented. Have a clear idea of what you want to do with the grad scheme and be prepared to talk about your weaknesses.

Associated British Foods (Grocery)

Business Development Manager, Retail Field Sales Team at Associated British Foods (Grocery)

Application Advice: Evidently, you need to have done your reasearch. You are competing against lots of good candidates so don't miss out on something that you should have easily known- about the grocery group, the role and ABF in general. Think about why you would be suited to both the business and the role, and brain storm experiences that prove this in interview situations.

Interview Advice: You do need to have all the qualities that they say one needs in sales - motivation, adaptability, resilience etc. because it can be a demoralising and challenging role at times - and the recruitment process is there to make sure you would be suitable for the role. You need to be able to adapt to build relationships with people from all walks of life and cultures; cultural and social sensitivity is fundamental. You need to feel comfortable in uncomfortable situations and stay positive and confident in these situations. Ultimately you need the drive to win over people and influence them to take on your advice, support, brands and ideas in store. Advice would be to think of situations where you have been challenged and overcome difficult situations, or you have been thrown out of your comfort zone and thrived. However, I think they are also really looking for passion and enthusiasm; even if you have the most amazing competency examples- you need to be passionate. They are looking for potential.

Interview Advice: Back up every answer with an example. Keep good eye contact especially when applying for a sales role as relationship building is key to success. If you're yourself in the application and write a covering letter that shows your fun and competitive side, you've a higher chance of getting through. Typically this is shown through playing sport, or having hobbies that show a competitive side!

Interview Advice: As above - and some. If you make management laugh, share stories, and the interview lasts an hour, but feels like it was ten minutes... you're doing well. Don't pretend to know about sales if you don't - the business doesn't expect you to have any sales skills (although some experience is helpful). We are looking for great people - you will have all the training you need to learn to "sell". Other pointers - dress smart (that means a suit), shave (if you're a man - bristle is fashionable, but not smart!) and don't wear brown shoes!!!

Associated British Foods (Grocery)

Territory Manager, Oxfordshire at Associated British Foods (Grocery)

Application Advice: Be yourself! ABF is a friendly company and they want to get the best out of you, so if you be yourself, then you will know whether you will fit in to the organisation. Be prepared! Think of times when you did well and also times when you didn't do so well. Knowing yourself and your strengths and weaknesses is a really important part of the application process. Examples can come from university, part-time work, social or sports clubs/committees or anything where you play an important role in making things happen.

Interview Advice: I had a phone interview, Skype interview and 2 face-to-face interviews at my assessment day. For the phone interview, make sure you have done your homework and know what ABF is all about and you have really looked into what the job is you're applying for. The Skype interview was really good. I hadn't done one before this, but it is much easier than a phone interview because you can see the interviewer so you can tell when they are looking interested and get a feel for whether they want to know more about what you're talking about. The Skype interview is more to do with the STAR technique of answering questions (situation, task, action, result) so if you think about some ideas/scenarios before the call and think of STAR, you can give structured answers and won't waste time. At the assessment centre, the interviews are more for the interviewers to find out more about yourself. This is where you can show your personality and talk about your experiences. Think how your skills fit in with ABF values and the job role. And come with some questions for the interviewers - it is supposed to be 2-way.

Intel

Customer Business Analyst, Operations at Intel

Application Advice: There is a very social culture in this company so you will most likely enjoy it more if you are outgoing and personable. Be prepared for the very high pressure that comes with most roles here as it is easy to let stress get the better of you if you don't pace yourself.

Interview Advice: Having a second language is useful due to the multi-national environment. I recommend not being overly business-like to the point that you appear boring. I was accepted in part because I sounded like someone who would be interesting and fun to work with.

If you have travelled, been to camp America or even just lead the organisation of a holiday with your friends - it all counts.

Interview Advice: Be yourself, Unilever employ as much for the personality as they do for the skills and experience that you can bring. Show your personality, energy and passion throughout the application process and if Unilever is right for you then it will all work out.

Express Vending

Sales Manager, London & Home Counties at Express Vending

Application Advice: Be prepared to work really, really hard. It’s a myth that sales careers are all about having "the gift of the gab". You need to be prepared to work harder than anyone else in the room.

Interview Advice: Think about things you have done that prove you are resilient. Even if you've failed at something and have had to come back from a disappointment in life, you need to see this as character building and proof of your resilience, rather than a negative. Be confident, but not arrogant!
