Civil Service Fast Stream

Project Manager, Digital and Technology at Civil Service Fast Stream

Application Advice: Tenacity is required to get onto the scheme, the application process is very long. Don't worry unduly if you do not get in first time, a failed first-run is the best preparation for a subsequent bid and will put you at an advantage against the others at FSAC/FSBs as unlike most of the competition you will know what to expect. The feedback from a failed run is also invauable for preparing for the following year's application round.

Interview Advice: For the FSB, ensure that you research your specialism in respect to government. The FSAC interview tends to be about what you have done, the FSB tends to be about what government (rather than yourself) should do, be aware of this distinction.

Interview Advice: Relax and try to act naturally, like you would if you already worked for the organisation and you were in a meeting. Practise talking honestly about what interests you in the work and why you are a strong candidate - don't just regurgitate the competences, explain them in relation to concrete points of your application.

Interview Advice: The Civil Service Fast Stream Assessment Centre is really difficult - but you can prepare for it, and it will be worth it. Do loads of reading prior to the FSAC, ensure that you have a good grasp of key political and business issues (which hopefully you will have already from pre-existing interests or your education). But remember, that the FSAC whilst long, and tiresome, contains some generic parts. Generic parts are: one on one interview (although come armed with examples which demonstrate the competencies) - but think about how you would perform well at any interview and group exercise (I used the internet to figure out optimal behaviour(s) and think about how to organise the discussion before hand.). As for the other parts, I ensured that I was 'commercially' savvy and on the ball with any key considerations for broader central government issues/ initiatives.

Application Advice: Research the organisational structure of the Civil Service, how this is changing and how it will affect how Government interacts with the public. The 'Civil Service Reform Plan' is a good place to start.

Interview Advice: Statisically the odds are strongly against any candidate applying to the Fast Stream and I would advise not to set your sights solely on the scheme. This will help ease the pressure on what is already a very competitive and long process. I thought I had blown my chances in the first exercise of the assessment centre which allowed me to relax. I felt like pressure was off, this resulted in me performing strongly in the remaining exercises and I think was pivotal in my success.
