Grant Thornton UK LLP

Audit Associate, Public Sector Audit at Grant Thornton UK LLP

Application Advice: .This role will require a lot of travelling so be prepared for that! I suggest you have a genuine interest in the public sector as otherwise you might not enjoy the challenges associated with the role.

Interview Advice: Research the company and the current economic climate as this is really important when coming to interview.

Actuarial Analyst, Actuarial and risk at Grant Thornton UK LLP

Application Advice: Make sure you have a good understanding of the Actuarial exams (i.e. what kind of topics they cover and how much of a commitment the qualification is) and the type of work carried out by actuarial consultancies, so that you can demonstrate a specific interest in this. Understanding what Grant Thornton has to offer compared to the big four, for example, will also set you in good stead.

Interview Advice: In hindsight I think the most important qualities the assessors are looking for are sociability, enthusiasm and a bit of common sense! It's completely understandable that you won't know the ins and outs of the work we do, but you want to come across as someone who would be pleasant to work with, i.e. easy to talk to, relaxed, comfortable asking/answering questions.

Application Advice: Read the job offer, see if your skills fit it or not, if yes, make sure it appears somewhere on your application. Take enough time to do a correct application, you are selling yourself, you are somehow a brand and if you sell it bad, the chances to have an interview are decreasing. The goal must be to go to the interview!

Interview Advice: Get prepared for the interview and don't be overstressed during the interview. It is not an exam, it is a discussion to be sure if you are suiting the role. For you it's the opportunity to get to know the people working there, and also to make sure it is what you are expecting.

Application Advice: The psychometric tests employed in the second part of the recruitment process will appear to be very similar to ones used by other companies but have a significantly higher difficulty. Ensure you are well prepared and complete them in a relaxed environment or you will get tripped up!

Interview Advice: Your interview will be competency based. This is a great interview style to ensure fairness for all candidates but a lot of people can find this type of interview quite difficult. However, research the interview type beforehand if you've never done one before. Get asked a tricky question? Simply be prepared to stop and think out your answer in the interview itself. You're being judged on the quality of your answer, not on the speed with which you give it.

Application Advice: Make sure that you meet the pre-requisites of the programme. If you don't have a clear mathematical, economic, or science background, then you're extremely unlikely to be successful applying for Actuarial. That said, there are lots of other AXA programmes that don't have a mathematical pre-requisite. REALLY distinguish yourself in the competency and free-form application questions. Assuming everyone went to a good university and a good degree in maths, these questions are your only chance to stand out - so make it unique and make it specific to us! You might think your cut/paste stock answer covers the key points, but it will stick out like a sore thumb to someone who reads 100's of them (and not in a good way either)!

Interview Advice: Make sure you understand the Actuarial exam scheme. It's important that you demonstrate you are aware of the commitment you are undertaking (15 rigorous and mathematically challenging exams). The details, as well as the guideline study times per exam, are available on the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries' website. As with most graduate programmes, there is a competency element to the interview. It helps to be familiar with the competencies and AXA values listed on the website and to have pre-prepared a few examples of how you have demonstrated each competency. It sounds silly, but research AXA and current topics in the UK Insurance industry. It's surprising how many people turn up more prepared to talk about consulting, or try to wing it based entirely on their experience of buying car or travel insurance!

Catlin Insurance

European Service Transition Manager, Global Strategic Sourcing at Catlin Insurance

Application Advice: I originally applied for the Graduate Development Programme - the application procedure was much the same as any other graduate scheme. However getting to the assessment centre showed that Catlin is actually quite different from other graduate schemes. My advice woud be to just be yourself, think of the stream you are applying for and why you want to apply for it (tip: 'beacause I couldn't think of a reason not to' is not an advisable answer). If people were applying for my currently role (which is now based in Poland), I would advise that that person be flexible, proactive and approachable. These qualities are very much needed in my current role, they are also desirable qualities for the Development Programme as well.

Interview Advice: Catlin really does work and operate by its core values, they are not just there for show. This is very important in the application process.
