Application Advice: The minimum requirements are only 5 GCSE passes & 2 A-levels or A-Level equivalents, however you'll be applying against people who have far surpassed this minimum requirement. Therefore, on your CV/personal statement, after your grades, I would recommend writing about extra circular activities, work experience, or volunteering opportunities you've done and the skills you've learnt and/or shown through this.

Application Advice: Don't be hesitant if you don't have much prior knowledge of accountancy or don't enjoy mathematics. I have learned everything I know from working within the company and through their training; I had not studied a related subject at sixth form or university. You need to have a fundamental understanding of mathematics but to be a good accountant you must be analytical and also be able to communicate effectively with your team and with clients. If you possess these assets then definitely highlight them and use clear examples of them when you apply.

Interview Advice: Menzies values having a range of different personality types in order to create a diverse working environment where different people bring a wide range of skills to the table. Be yourself in the interview and be sure to ask questions about the company. It does not matter if you do not have any prior accountancy knowledge; show that you are interested, analytical, and work well within a team. Definitely use examples to reflect these skills and do some research on the company values and tie your experiences back to those values as well.

NFU Mutual

Professional Trainee, Group Change at NFU Mutual

Application Advice: There are a huge number of applicants for roles at NFU Mutual so competition is fierce. Make sure you are passionate about the company and the role you are applying for. It may be a cliché, but it’s a very common pitfall. Explain why the company excites you and why it will help you grow and develop. Know your stuff - about the role and the company. Applicants who have actually done their research on the role and company they are applying for impress recruiters. It shows they are keen and have the right attitude for the workplace. Take a look at their website, see what they've been doing over the past few years and what they plan to do in the future. Not only this, but research the industry the company operates in. What are the trends that may affect them in the next few years? Be you! It may sound really simple, but just be yourself. You will get the most out of the experience by being you. Be honest about who you are and your experiences and be open to new opportunities.

Interview Advice: Make sure you research the employer again. Remind yourself of what you learnt when you made the original job application and build upon it. Have things changed since then? See what things the company are involved in and think about how you could contribute to this. Think about yourself and your unique skills. The interviews at NFU Mutual are based upon the Personal Star (Google this!), a competency-based framework allowing you to demonstrate past experience that aligns with our principles. Make sure you have questions prepared for the interviewer. Everyone thinks that the interview is a test to make sure the candidate is the right fit for the company. Although this is true, it is also a test that the company is the right place for you. Don't be afraid to ask questions, but make sure you have done your research beforehand (if you could find the answer to your question on the Internet, you are demonstrating that you haven't prepared).

Allianz are looking for people who are willing to learn and have some transferable skills which will make you a good fit for a fast paced industry such as insurance.

Interview Advice: Be yourself, Allianz looks for people who will fit in the company culture. They don't mind if you don't know certain things as long as you are willing and capable to learn. Being yourself will mean you come off better. Initial interview was based around your skills and how you can show these with previous examples of work you have done/things you have taken part in. For the assessment day, you can't really prepare for this so don't stress. Do some preparation on the insurance industry in general and some basic insurance info as you will likely be asked on things to do with Allianz and competitors. Apart from this, just revise what you went over in your initial interview so you have that to fall back on if questioned.

I know it can be quite weird, but you just have to pretend that you are talking to someone, and answer like you would if there was someone sitting in front of you. I actually didn't think about this earlier, but you can always pretend that you are speaking to a friend that you would find it easy to respond to in an interview style. Also, irrespective of the interview, just be 100% yourself. If you can do that, you've already won half the battle.

NFU Mutual

Professional Trainee, Customer Service Operations at NFU Mutual

Application Advice: Persevere! Having graduated 8 years ago, I have had a couple of other roles since university and the recruitment process for NFU Mutual was without a doubt the lengthiest and most rigorous I have faced to so far. (I think it took around 8 months from my initial application to an actual job offer!). There were several points along the way that I thought that they must no longer be interested, but it's was purely that the process is slow and communication a little sporadic which I think is a reflection of the high volume of applications. This has only been my experience of the recruitment process though; since being offered the job communication has been fantastic every step of the way.

Interview Advice: Easy to say but be yourself. The environment at NFU is professional but relaxed and they value individual differences much more than other companies I've worked for. I got the impression at the assessment day that they were really looking for people who had integrity so don't try to pretend to be something you're not! I had two interviews with the company and in the first one I spent so much time worrying about what I thought they'd want to hear, rather than what I actually had to say, that I made a bit of a mess of it! Second time round I worried a lot less about the answer they were looking for and found my answers were a lot more natural and sincere so they got to see the real me, rather than the rehearsed answers I'd given before.

Graduate schemes are highly competitive, so anything you can do to set yourself apart is great. - You'll be required to take Maths and English tests, utilise the practice papers supplied, this is often where candidates trip up as they think they've got it in the bag.

Application Advice: Fire out as many applications as you can, you will get knocked back by plenty (which is fine) and get through to different stages on others. Be honest on application and interviews, don;t try to 'blag' anything - if you don't know just say so but that you are looking to develop your understanding. Look at the key skills and attributes required for the role and ensure ou highlight these in your applications.

Interview Advice: Above all be honest and communicate clearly. The application tells them your existing qualifications - they are partially interested in those bits of paper but as interested, if not more so, in who YOU are in terms of your personal attributes. Are you someone who is supportive of others, hard working, willing to keep learning, organised, and so on. Of the 100+ people who applied they told me that I got the job largely down to the examples I talked through about helping my previous colleagues in their issues as the company culture is all about helping each other and continuing to learn. Give examples whenever you discuss what you have done to make it tangible and relatable. Do NOT make things up.

Claims Apprentice, Large Corporate Insurance at NFU Mutual

Application Advice: My advice for the application process is to type all the questions on the application onto a word document and write a draft answer for every question. Then, write as much as you can for each question without overlapping too many points. Finally, cut down each point to give a clear and sufficient answer. This will allow you to get your point across in each answer and discuss your skills and expertise thoroughly.

Interview Advice: My advice for the interview process is to use a star method for questions where they ask for examples from previous experiences. Describing a task, what the task was, how you tackled it and how it was resolved helps to clarify and strategise your answers. Another tip is to practice reading some common interview questions beforehand so you have a rough idea of what questions might be coming your way. Getting someone to quiz you on said questions as well so you can practice reading them out.

Interview Advice: For the 'informal' introduction interviews, try to relax as they are trying to get to know who you are rather than just what's on your CV. Try to relax and treat it like a conversation - ask questions back so you know the type of company you are interviewing for. For the formal interviews be prepared and make sure to have a few questions for the end to ask. If doing a presentation try not to just read what you've prepared. Try to have on hand examples of situations involving teamwork, leadership, flexibility and decision making for the question portion of the interview.

Interview Advice: In the interview, I was asked to prepare a 10-minute presentation about why I would be an ideal candidate for the role. Insurance Practicioner Level 3, Casualty at Chaucer Group

Application Advice: The advice I would give to candidates is to come across enthusiastic about the role and have some basic background information on what Insurance is as well as the types of Insurance. This does not mean each candidate should have a wide range of knowledge in Insurance but just a rough idea of what Chaucer does.

Interview Advice: My advice for the Interview stage is to be prepared and have examples ready to use for each question that is asked to you. In my opinion, it is best to show evidence to back up what you are saying. For example, an example of you being organised could be an individual report you did and the deadlines you had to follow. The types of questions you could prepare for are; - What types of Insurance are there? - What do you know about Chaucer? - What are some of your strengths? - A weakness?

If you have shown that you have worked and will be willing to work hard during your studies with the company, you will have as good a chance as anyone else. Show them why you deserve to be there. Not just about how good your grades are, or might not be. Show them who you are, because it's just as important to fit in with the team as it is to pass the exams.

Interview Advice: They are not as scary as they may seem. They started out just like you have. Be prepared, do your research and be yourself. Prepare one or two decent questions rather than many little ones that are just standard. You may be asked to talk about yourself. Project Management Level 4, Global Services and Solutions at Willis Towers Watson

Interview Advice: - Be confident and make eye contact - The interview/assessment centre was split into 3 (30 mins each) interviews and a group activity - Do not treat the verbal interview as a "life and death situation", be relaxed and be yourself, but also listen to the questions carefully so your answers do not go off track - During the interview, do not fidget and take a comfortable but presentable position to show you are approachable - you will need to put this attitude in practice when at a face-to-face meeting with a client - Learn about what WTW do, although this is not a question in itself, showing you have read about and are interested in the company is an advantage, helping with the group exercise - you can think of volunteering initiatives/ideas that have not been executed by the company yet Questions I was asked: "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?" Scenario questions eg. "If your manager comes to you and asks to take on some more work, considering you are already busy, what do you do?"

Application Advice: For new candidates I would recommend having some form of customer service on your CV and reference in the application because this is something they ask about in their first and second stages of application and how it would make you suitable. Also show how you can lead and work as a team; for my CV I listed sports as this is a good example of this. Lastly; any volunteering or fundraising looks good in the application because it means you are willing to go the extra not just do the mandatory.

Interview Advice: During the interviews, they did a situation, personality and a competency interview after an initial group interview; it was a 3 hour session in total with 4 of us in the group. Each of the individual interviews was around 20 minutes, for these they do repeat some of the similar questions about leadership, teamwork, but in the personality interview, they asked questions about what you would do if there was a problem how would you resolve type questions.

AAT Trainee (level 3 and 4), Corporate Audit and Advisory at Larking Gowen

Application Advice: I would say the most important thing is to make sure that if you are sending in a CV, make sure that it isn't too long. I would say that a CV is too long if it is more than 2 sides of A4 paper - keep it brief and then you can expand on it during your interview! Another piece of advice I would give is, even if you have missed the deadline or there are no jobs advertised, to send in your CV (and a covering letter) anyway. This means that you may be considered for an internally advertised role. At least if you do this then the company has your details so can contact you about any future opportunities.

Interview Advice: Make lots of eye contact with the interviewers and speak clearly. This makes it less awkward as they don't have to ask you to repeat answers and they can see if you are genuine. Another piece of advice I would give is to research the company, the role and your interviews so you know a little bit about them. Often, interviewers have asked me what I know regarding these, this just shows you haven't randomly applied and it implies that you know your stuff.

Application Advice: Insurance is a technical but also very social industry so make sure to mention something in your CV which demonstrates you're ability to interact with different people confidently, whether this means mentioning that you worked in a client-facing position before or if you're a school-leaver/grad you may want to mention any roles/activities you did during education which gave you exposure to meeting different people i.e. mentoring, organizing social events, social clubs etc. These also demonstrate your ability to be a team player or even leadership skills.

Interview Advice: Try to have a good balance between discussing your achievements/qualifications and also offer skills you may have or hobbies you have. This keeps the discussion interesting and means you show different aspects of yourself which are all important in someway in the workplace. This is one of the industries where having different qualities/interests is important too. Try to be relaxed and as calm as possible. Ask questions about the role and about the industry if you're new to it.

Application Advice: Be sure to highlight the most important aspects of your CV/cover letter. Include all relevant experience; include both technical and soft skills that you have acquired in previous employment/situations.

Interview Advice: I would definitely ensure that your personality is conveyed in your interview. Keep up to date with current affairs as working in insurance requires you to have knowledge of what's going on around the world. Have working examples of when you have portrayed a certain skill. Ask the interviewer questions that relate to the job role, the company and the industry as a whole.

Corporate Tax Associate, Corporate Tax at Grant Thornton UK LLP

Application Advice: Do your application on a word document so you are able to keep coming back to it and editing, when you think of new things to add. Make sure you start your application as early as possible so you do not have to rush and can put as much effort into it as you can. Use the website for ideas..I.e if the question asks about why you want to work here, incorporate some ideas from the website about opportunities you have seen or the values aligning with similar beliefs that you have.

Interview Advice: Be relaxed and honest - it comes across blatantly when someone is trying too hard! Don't worry if you need a moment to think about the question and smile .. If you are in a group interview or group task, don't be afraid to contribute to the discussion but make sure not to come across too over-bearing over the rest of the group. Maybe offer to take up a role such as time minder or minute taker, but make sure to get involved when and where you can. Some questions you may get asked at interview include why you want to work here; about any experience; if you are aware of anything in the news; why you have chosen this company and not another one and why you don't want to go to university.

Application Advice: Really research why you want to join GT. There is nothing better than an applicant who is hard working and enthusiastic about the role they are applying for. Get to know what you would be doing in a role at GT and why that interests you. Research the background behind our values and our progression through the years. As GT has changed and grown so much, in competition with the big four, what really makes us stand out is a question you should be asking yourself.

Interview Advice: Be yourself. If you have got to the interview stage, then GT knows that you are well qualified and fit for the job role. They now want to get to know you. To decide whether you would fit in with the culture we have worked so hard to build over the last couple of years. Be relaxed and really let your personality shine through. Make sure you know all about the values at GT and what we stand for too.

Application Advice: I would advise to be truthful and to ensure they put as much detail into their application. I would also advise to not rush the application as they could be missing out key information.

Interview Advice: They would need to be aware of the company. Ensure to research the company and also the role itself. Also in the interview they would need to make sure they are confident in how they speak and their body language. Then I would advise to process any questions they receive and do not rush into the answer as it could lead to having a poor response.

Junior Account Executive, at Search Companies

Application Advice: This kind of apprenticeship has a very structured routine of attending workshops, which is ideal for those wishing to have an assisted training programme, but less so for those wishing to work more independently/ learn more during the day to day role itself.

Interview Advice: The application process is very intensive, I initially believed this was a very competitive position, after the interview with other candidates, I wasn't so sure. I would research the basics of what Willis does as an insurance intermediary and show willing to learn all of the necessary skills to become competent in the particular role you are applying for e.g. as an account executive, get the basis of what client executives do and how to conduct yourself in a business orientated manner.
