Graduate – Marketing Executive, at 3M

Application Advice: Show your passion for the role and the field which it is in, for example marketing, finance etc.

Interview Advice: Be yourself! Your personality is just as important as skills. Employers look for the right fit within the team, so showing your personality is key. Also using 'real work' examples, instead of university examples, when answering behavioural questions is more favoured and is what the employer is looking for.

Sky

Marketing Graduate, at Sky

Application Advice: Really focus on doing yourself justice at the written application stage. Don't just copy and paste your answers from other applications. Being specific to yourself and Sky is really important, and a number of applicants are filtered out at this stage so definitely worth putting some time into.

Interview Advice: Don't be afraid to ask questions in the interviews if you don't understand; all my interviewers were very friendly and more than willing to answer any questions - it reflects badly if you just 'wing it'. Be enthusiastic, be yourself and while they won't expect you to know everything about Sky definitely know bits of detail that relate to your own interests/skills and passions. And as far as possible, enjoy the experience. Sky has a very relaxed enjoyable working environment day to day so try and allow yourself to experience this in the interview. And finally, definitely don't worry if you feel it's going badly. I thought the assessment centre had gone really badly but received the offer anyway!

What are your strengths and what are your weaknesses? What do you really like about the company? What unique attribute can you bring to the company? Know the company's values and beliefs. You can learn it's figures and how it operates, but demonstrating you share it's ethos is essential.

Interview Advice: Be friendly, personable and enthusiastic. A smile can make a big difference to how you're perceived. Be confident in your answers, but also acknowledge that you don't know everything and you do have a lot to learn - that's the point of the grad scheme!

Application Advice: The company as a whole is looking to grow more internationally, so if you have a passion for travel, other cultures or other languages make sure to include this. Of course, if you have any international experience, get that in too: language classes; exchange placement; travelling; international internship etc. Don't feel overwhelmed by the apparent complexity of the corporate structure compared to other companies with graduate schemes. I spent hours revising this and wasn't asked a single question on this through the entire process. If they get you to do a presentation, make sure you have sources and reasons why you used those sources. It was the first question they asked me in the Q&A afterwards.

Interview Advice: The advice I would give to anyone on the final interview (or even the phone interview) is that something in your application has got their interest - don't be afraid to refer to, or elaborate on, what your wrote on the application - this is what they want to hear!

Marketing and Communications Graduate, Marketing and Communications at Capita

Application Advice: Demonstrate your strengths and show how you are different from the other candidates. Any leadership roles you have done (no matter how junior you feel they may be) is a talking point and can always be expanded upon in an interview. But most of all, be honest and be yourself. The Capita Lead the Way programme is looking for individuals with drive, ambition and just someone who has something about them.

Interview Advice: In any interview you should be the one who does most of the talking. The interviewer should only speak for a minimal amount of time and the interviewee should be expanding upon and demonstrating their skills and qualities. As with the application, be honest and just be yourself. I was asked in an interview "Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?". This question is tricky but just be honest. I gave a realistic answer and explained that I would have finished the graduate scheme, achieved a MSc and ideally be in a management role. There's nothing worse than joking about being at Board level after 5 years and hoping to be CEO by that time - it shows that seniority and job titles are all that is important to you.

Application Advice: Show your enthusiasm and brush up on the company, its departments and what each business sells. Make sure your ambition shows through in your application. There is a psychometric test to take before the assessment centre, be honest with this.

Interview Advice: Interview for the grad scheme is a 2 and half day event. There is an introduction to the company and an evening meal with some current graduates, take this opportunity to ask them questions, relax and have a drink. There is a chemistry test which covers some basic organic chemistry and industry related questions, but don't worry about it too much. There is a maths test and a reasoning test, both of which are very standard. There is a grammar test that covers tricky spellings, a written problem-solving assessment, a couple of group tasks and a one-on-one interview. It is exhausting but helps the assessors get a full picture of you. My advice is to not worry if you think you've done badly in one part.
