M&C Saatchi Group

Graduate Strategist, Direct Marketing at M&C Saatchi Group

Application Advice: No matter the question in the application process (from your views on advertising to what you'd put in room 101), I believe that it's crucial to demonstrate an ability to convey a message in an incredibly clear and concise manner. Cut-through is a major part of an agency's creative effectiveness and is probably a skill that is sought out as early as the application process.

Interview Advice: Do the homework and stick to the rules! At my interview, some candidates didn't have the presentation we were asked to prepare to hand, and some did not stick to the time limit. Being prepared and sticking to the challenge's rules help you build your confidence during the process. I also would not be too worried about speaking the most in group exercises. Waiting to speak last can often give you more time to reflect and come up with much more insightful comments.

M&C Saatchi Group

Strategist, London Agency at M&C Saatchi Group

Application Advice: Curiosity is essential.

Interview Advice: How have you considered/thought about/answered the problem in a different way to how your competitors are? Good strategy has the ability to change the game in an industry: consider Dove Real Women, or This Girl Can. That just took someone to go "Well this is how everyone else is doing it, so we can either be like them, or be something else".

AMV BBDO

Junior Strategist, Strategy at AMV BBDO

Application Advice: This is not an application for PWC or a bank.. be yourself and write how you talk. It's great to have achievements but let them speak for themselves and use the process for the company to see who you really are.

Interview Advice: The obvious things are - Know a lot about the company and why you want to work here specifically. - Have answers for all advert related questions (e.g. what's the best one you've seen recently? what's your favourite one that we've done? what's your worst one? what's the best digital ad you've noticed? and WHY for all of them!) - Why you are right for the job? It's less competency based than other jobs and more about making you think on your feet. So be prepared to answer questions that you haven't actually prepared for and maybe analyse an ad that they give to you.

Leo Burnett

Planner, at Leo Burnett

Application Advice: Unless adverts fascinate and delight you, this isn't the role for you. Planning requires a genuine understanding of what an advert or piece of communication is trying to do, beyond a superficial 'like it/don't like it'. The good news is that all you really need to do when applying is be able to demonstrate that understanding, and be sure to show your enthusiasm and passion too!

Interview Advice: Read a lot. There's loads out there - blogs, books, industry magazines etc. It's good to come across as knowledgeable. Be careful though, try and talk about your own opinions of particular adverts too. There's loads of insightful analysis of what ads do and don't work out there, but it'll be obvious if you're just parroting someone else's view.

Dentsu Aegis Network

Communications Planning Assistant, Carat at Dentsu Aegis Network

Application Advice: Be smart, and be proactive. You will get given things, but the most interesting things you can get are things you need to set up yourself. If you're smart, don't just sit there 'being smart', use your intelligence to the advantage of yourself and your team. Don't be daunted by big business questions. Nobody expects you to have the answers, but remember that in this industry your input is as valuable of those many ranks your senior because you live in this world and are exposed to media and advertising as much as anyone, and there will be at least one audience you understand better than anyone else.

Interview Advice: Be honest. The people interviewing you are in the business of understanding how people behave, what they think and feel, and why they do those things; they will see through you. Trying to 'game' them into giving you a job may or may not work, but it certainly won't be satisfying when you're working late nights on big projects, and there's nowhere to hide who you are. Being 'nice' doesn't equate to being boring or forgettable. Don't forget that there's nothing like giving time to someone else's thoughts and feelings for them to have a good impression of you.

DAS

Strategist, Digital Marketing at DAS

Application Advice: You don't need to be the fully formed thing, you just need to be 'passionately curious' as Einstein once said. A willingness to learn, self awareness, enthusiasm and the fearless drive to 'get stuck in' will all lend themselves to success.

Interview Advice: The interviews are held on group days. This is a creative industry you're trying to break into: don't present yourself like an estate agent. Stand out, have personality, have a memorable 'quirky' thing (but make sure this isn't contrived!). You need to show that you're creative and a great communicator: that's what the job is all about. It's ok not to know all the answers or to have identified your faults - self awareness is a good quality - but of course don't dwell on them.
