Sky

Application Advice: Research Sky Behaviours in depth and understand how you have showcased these behaviour. Think about what work environment you can see yourself in and whether Sky fits that picture. Speak to as many Sky graduates as possible to gain insight into what they do and to learn more about roles available.

Interview Advice: Use the STAR approach to answer competency questions. Don't plan what you want to say word for word. Instead have an idea what questions they may ask and make some bullet point lists of key points that showcase how you've demonstrated your skills. Have this template in mind when you are asked questions, it will sound more natural and won't sound like you're reading off a script. Try not to be nervous, see it as a friendly chat and use questions at the end to find out more about what the Interviewer's do. Definitely ask questions to show your engagement.

Application Advice: Be prepared to be thrown in the deep end. You'll have the support you need around you to flourish if you're willing to put the effort in - it's very rewarding.

Interview Advice: Be true to yourself - it's easy to see past someone saying something because they think they know what you want to hear. BT is about hiring people, skills can be learnt so it's about finding the right sort of driven talented person that's key to BT.

Sky

Technology Graduate, Technology at Sky

Application Advice: When answering questions use in depth examples that really reflect your personality. Also make sure they are relevant to the question and the company and provide support for any claims you have made about yourself. One of the best things about the Technology Graduate scheme is the flexibility you have to shape your roles - it therefore needs to be clear that you are open minded and willing to learn.

Interview Advice: As mentioned above, relevant and in-depth examples are vital. Also have a clear idea of why you want to work at Sky specifically. Ensure you touch on aspects of Sky and the Technology Graduate scheme that are unique. Finally, it's cliche but be yourself - Sky pride themselves on selecting candidates that are diverse. Not just in gender and ethnicity but also in the way you make decisions and approach tasks. Recognise your strengths and weaknesses and how you plan to improve and learn while on the graduate scheme.

Microsoft

Technical Account Manager, Premier Support at Microsoft

Application Advice: The company values disappeared while I was there and carry no weight while in a role at the company (as you'd expect in a giant corporation), but they do matter a lot when you apply, and I do think Microsoft try hard to find people who demonstrate them: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/legal/compliance/buscond/overview.aspx Don't waste too much time (but do spend some), researching Microsoft's history and everything the company is doing. I made the mistake of becoming the UK's #1 quizzer on Microsoft (on Quiz Up) and ended up knowing more about Microsoft than most of the company. Most Microsofties don't actually know nearly as much as you'd expect about the company or products. They're just nice (and mostly smart) people!

Interview Advice: Focus on likeability, teamwork and positivity. Even though Ballmer is gone, evanglism is a big part of Microsoft, be sincere when you talk about what you love about the company. If you can present in the final assessment centre, do it! Both of us who presented in my assessment center of 8 were hired (and it was the same in the others).

Atos

Graduate Support Analyst, Application Support at Atos

Application Advice: Make sure you know key parts of the company and the company values. Matching company values to your own demonstrates your knowledge of the company as well as that you match their values.

Interview Advice: Personally I'm not very outgoing and can be quiet in group situations as I don't want to dominate the group or be rude. But in the assessment centre it is very important to make contributions in the group tasks. I wasn't talking all the time but my feedback was that when I did speak I was adding value to the discussion so it's worth thinking about the quality of what you're saying and not the quantity. As most interviews the generic questions were asked about past experiences (e.g. name a time when you were a leader/were in an under performing team/dealt with a heavy workload etc.) Again it is important to know about the company. Key stories in the news both current and old are always good to demonstrate your prep work on the company. If the company has values then match them to your own values. One I nearly slipped up on was the company's competitors, good to know that too.

Interview Advice: Be yourself and show your strengths. You will have to show that you can work in a team, but the interviewers will also want to see why you are the best choice for the role. Interview Advice: Be confident in your problem solving abilities. It is more about the questions you ask to find the answer rather than knowing the answer. The company will train you on all the more technical skills to give you the situational information you need, so what they are looking for is the ability to analyse information, ask the right questions to get more information and how you get to your conclusions. Graduate Network Analyst, Element Management at Telefonica

Application Advice: The most important thing is to be yourself and don't feel pressured to lie or embellish because you think that's what people want to hear. If you have to lie to get a job then is it really what you want to be doing? You are far more likely to get a job by showing the interviewer the real you and not some grandstanding fictional character.

Interview Advice: The interview was only part of the assessment, which also included group and individual tasks which are designed to show how well you can work. The tasks vary every year, but will generally be based on applying your analysis and planning skills to a brief either giving an individual presentation or working as a group. As for the interview itself, I found knowledge of the company was very important, as there were several questions about my understanding of the company and the market, as well as questions about me.

Apprentice Technical Support Analyst, Field Support at E.ON

Application Advice: With the application you need to ensure that you really put every good quality of yourself out there. In this case, all your computing achievements and qualifications and also anything else that involves core soft skills such as any team or club you were part of that exemplifies that you can thrive in an environment that requires co-operation to succeed. It's all about presenting every good part of yourself to really make the employer think that you are distinguishable from the rest.

Interview Advice: With the interviews, it is more important to show that you are a well-rounded person rather than just stating all of your computing achievements, after all if you are at the interview stage, they already likely know your knowledge and ability, the job requires a lot of verbal communication and teamwork to learn and improve and be actually able to do your job. Showing that you have drive and commitment is more important than just throwing computing achievements down as a work environment is entirely different to a classroom and theoretical one.
