Chaucer Group

Underwriting Assistant, International Casualty Treaty at Chaucer Group

Application Advice: Take the time to research the goals and aims of the company before hand to get a good feel for how the company operates and how you can help fit into this. It is also important to be honest and open with your application as dishonesty will not be sustainable throughout the process. Ideally you want to be evaluating the company at the same time as they evaluate you in order to check that the company is somewhere that fits you.

Interview Advice: Again, just be yourself and be honest. Try to relax and answer the questions in a considered and structured way. It often helps to prepare some answers to common questions beforehand so when the question is asked you have an answer or relevant scenario ready in your mind rather than having to think on the spot.

Chaucer Group

Graduate Underwriting Assistant, Underwriting (rotational within underwriting) at Chaucer Group

Application Advice: Research the Lloyd's insurance market in detail and gain an understanding for how it's a Market (not an insurer) and the service it provides to its syndicates. Learn about Chaucer's lines of business, with thoughts towards which areas of underwriting are of particular interest and why. My main point would be to understand how specialist insurance is different e.g. to personal lines insurance and to show a genuine interest in the market. Also focus on why you want to work for Chaucer, looking at how it differentiates itself form its competitors.

Interview Advice: There was a large focus on team work in the competency-based interview questions.

Allianz Insurance

Graduate Trainee, Retail at Allianz Insurance

Application Advice: In terms of application, I personally think it is great if you bring in some university experience to the problem based scenarios; however, I would say Allianz as a business appreciates more of a mixed application so try to bring through examples from your previous work experience or some volunteering you have completed.

Interview Advice: My assessment centre comprised of a business problem/case study and an interview. During the interview some of the questions from the initial application form are discussed so I would suggest that all applicants save their initial application form and have a bit of a read before they enter the assessment centre. There is no correct/incorrect answer to the case study. It is all about how you articulate and present your arguments. Be prepared to be questioned on your decision!

This company desires technical ability but above all the ability to work with others and to collaborate. A strong team-ethic will serve you well.

Interview Advice: The usual competency-based questions - make sure you have examples ready of times when you've worked as a team, influenced others opinions, overcome challenges etc.
